YouTube images have some of the strictest requirements of any platform. The channel banner at 2560x1440 displays differently across TVs, desktops, tablets, and phones — one image has to look good on all of them. Thumbnails need to hit 1280x720 and stay under 2MB. Profile pictures crop to a circle at 800x800. Get any of these wrong and your channel looks unprofessional.

The thumbnail at 1280x720 is the most important YouTube image. It determines whether people click on your video. A blurry or poorly-sized thumbnail kills click-through rate. Resize at the exact dimensions and keep file size under 2MB for fastest loading.
The channel banner at 2560x1440 is unusual because YouTube crops it for different devices. The 2560x1440 is the maximum. Desktop shows approximately 2560x423 centered. Tablet shows 1855x423. Mobile shows 1546x423. The "safe area" for text and logos is a centered 1546x423 rectangle. Anything outside that will be cropped on mobile devices.
YouTube Thumbnail: 1280x720 at Under 2MB
YouTube thumbnails have two constraints: exact dimensions (1280x720) and file size (under 2MB). Large, detailed images often exceed 2MB at 1280x720 quality. You have two paths:
Path 1: Resize first, then compress if needed. Use our resizer to get exact 1280x720 dimensions. Check the file size. If over 2MB, run through our image compressor to reduce file size.
Path 2: Start with a high-resolution source, resize smaller. If your original photo is very high resolution (say 6000x3375), resizing down to 1280x720 often naturally produces a file under 2MB.
Quality considerations: YouTube compresses thumbnails further after upload. Starting with a well-compressed 1.5-2MB image will produce better end-result quality than uploading a 3-4MB image that YouTube has to compress more aggressively.
For thumbnail design specifically (adding text, faces, high-contrast elements), use our YouTube thumbnail creator which is designed specifically for thumbnail design. The resizer is for taking an existing image and getting it to the right size.

YouTube's channel banner is uniquely difficult because it displays at different crops on different devices. The full 2560x1440 is only visible on TV. Desktop sees a centered slice. Mobile sees an even narrower slice.
The safe zones:
- Full banner (TV only): 2560x1440 — entire image
- Desktop max: 2560x423 — top and bottom are cropped
- Tablet: 1855x423 — narrower than desktop
- Mobile safe area: 1546x423 — narrowest, centered
Design your banner so that critical elements (channel name, tagline, logo) sit within the centered 1546x423 area. The rest of the banner can have decorative elements that appear on desktop and TV but are acceptable if cropped on mobile.
Resize workflow: start with a high-resolution source at 2560x1440 or larger. Use our resizer with the YouTube Banner preset. Export. Upload to YouTube Studio and preview across devices before publishing. YouTube's channel customization page shows previews for different screen sizes.
Common mistake: designing only for desktop view. When your critical elements get cropped on mobile, your channel looks amateurish to the majority of viewers who use YouTube on their phones.
YouTube Profile Picture: 800x800 Circle Crop
YouTube profile pictures upload at 800x800 but display as a circle across YouTube's interface. The image appears at various sizes: 800px on the channel page, down to 48px in video comments. The same image has to work at both extremes.
For channels run by individuals:
- Use a clear headshot with your face filling most of the frame
- Keep the background simple (solid color or blurred)
- Center your face — the circle crop removes corners
- Good lighting matters more than professional photography at 48px
For brand channels:
- Use your logo mark (icon), not a wordmark with text
- At 48px display size, text in a wordmark is unreadable
- High contrast between logo and background helps the icon read clearly at small sizes
- Keep the design simple — complex illustrations become visual noise at small sizes
If your logo needs a transparent background to overlay on different colors, use our background remover first, then add a solid color background at 800x800 before uploading. YouTube does not support transparent profile pictures — the circle background will show the YouTube interface color if you upload a transparent PNG.

What is the correct size for a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube thumbnails are 1280x720 pixels (16:9 ratio) with a maximum file size of 2MB. Upload at these exact dimensions to avoid YouTube compressing or cropping your thumbnail. Our resizer has a YouTube Thumbnail preset built in.
What is the right size for a YouTube banner?
YouTube channel banners are 2560x1440 pixels. The image displays differently on TV (full banner), desktop (2560x423 centered), tablet (1855x423), and mobile (1546x423). Design critical elements within the mobile safe area (centered 1546x423) so they display on every device.
How big should a YouTube profile picture be?
800x800 pixels. YouTube crops the image to a circle and displays it at various sizes from 48px to 800px. Keep important content centered and avoid placing details near the corners since they get hidden by the circle crop.
Can I resize YouTube images without Photoshop?
