Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac — Free, No Extra Software
Last updated: April 20265 min readConverter Tools
Mac opens HEIC natively — but you still need JPG for websites, Windows users, and non-Apple apps. Three methods: Preview (built-in), Automator (batch), or browser-based (fastest).
3 Methods Compared
| Method | Single File | Batch | Setup | Speed |
|---|
| Preview (built-in) | ✓ Easy | ✗ One at a time | ✓ None | ~30 sec per file |
| Automator Quick Action | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes | ~5 min setup once | ✓ Fast after setup |
| Browser converter | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes | ✓ None | ✓ Fastest |
Method 1: Preview (Single Files)
- Right-click the HEIC file → Open With → Preview
- File → Export
- Format: JPEG
- Quality slider: 85-95% (higher = better quality, larger file)
- Click Save
Simple but tedious for multiple files. Use this when you need to convert 1-2 photos.
Method 2: Automator (Batch — Built Into Mac)
- Open Automator (search in Spotlight)
- Choose "Quick Action"
- Set "Workflow receives" to "image files" in "Finder"
- Add action: "Change Type of Images" → set to JPEG
- Save as "Convert to JPG"
- Now: select HEIC files in Finder → right-click → Quick Actions → Convert to JPG
5 minutes to set up, then works forever. Right-click any selection of HEIC files to batch convert.
Method 3: Browser Converter (Fastest, Zero Setup)
- Open the free HEIC to JPG converter
- Drag and drop your HEIC files (any number)
- Click Convert — JPGs download instantly
No setup, no Automator workflow to build. Works immediately. Your photos process locally in Safari or Chrome — no upload.
When Mac Users Need to Convert
- Uploading to websites — many upload forms accept JPG/PNG only
- Sending to Windows users — they may not be able to open HEIC
- Importing into non-Apple apps — some design and editing tools don't support HEIC
- Social media — some platforms prefer JPG
- Printing services — most print shops accept JPG, not always HEIC
