Wise (formerly TransferWise) built its reputation by offering the mid-market exchange rate — the real rate, not the marked-up rate banks and PayPal use. That is genuinely good. The problem is that to actually convert money with Wise, you need an account, and to check rates quickly for research, the signup friction is unnecessary. You just want to know the rate.

Our free currency converter shows the same mid-market exchange rates from the European Central Bank — updated daily — without requiring a Wise account, any account, or even a page load beyond the converter itself. Here is how it compares to Wise's rate checker and when each is the right tool.

What "Mid-Market Rate" Actually Means

The mid-market rate (also called the interbank rate or real exchange rate) is the midpoint between the buy price and the sell price for a currency pair on the global currency market. It is what you see on Reuters or Bloomberg. It is not what banks charge you — banks add a margin on top of it, which is how they make money on currency conversion.

Wise's main selling point is that they use the mid-market rate for their transfers, then charge a transparent flat fee on top. This was revolutionary when they launched because most banks hid their margin inside the rate. Wise made the markup visible.

Our converter uses the same mid-market rate source (the European Central Bank), so the base rate you see here matches what Wise uses for their calculations. The difference is that we do not transfer money — we just show you the rate.

Use Wise when you actually want to send money. Use our converter when you want to check the rate — before a Wise transfer, before a bank wire, before a PayPal payment, before buying foreign currency at a kiosk.

How to Use Our Converter Before Any Transfer

Open the Currency Converter. Select your source currency (e.g., USD) and target currency (e.g., EUR). Enter the amount you plan to send. The result shows the mid-market equivalent — that is the fairest possible outcome if there were zero fees.

Now compare that number to what Wise, your bank, or PayPal quotes you. The gap is the fee. Wise is usually transparent about this (they show it as a line item). Banks typically hide it in the rate. PayPal hides it in the rate AND adds a percentage fee on top.

This check takes 30 seconds and gives you a reference point before every significant transfer.

When Wise Is Still the Right Choice

If you need to actually move money internationally, Wise is one of the best services available. Their rates are genuinely fair, their fees are transparent, and they are regulated in most major markets. For large transfers, the savings versus a traditional bank wire can be hundreds of dollars.

Our tool does not compete with Wise on transfer functionality — we only show rates. Where we beat Wise is frictionless rate-checking: no account, no app, instant result. Use both tools for what they are good at.

Check Multiple Currency Pairs at Once

Our converter shows popular currency pairs alongside your main conversion — so if you need USD to EUR but also want to see USD to GBP and USD to CAD, those appear automatically below the main result. No need to convert each separately.

This is useful for freelancers with clients in multiple countries, travelers making stops in several countries, or businesses with invoices in different currencies. See all relevant rates on one screen in one page load.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the rate shown here the same as the Wise rate?

Both use mid-market rates (the real interbank rate). Wise uses live market feeds updated continuously. Our source is the European Central Bank, updated daily. For most purposes the rates are functionally identical — the ECB rate is the standard reference for the real mid-market rate.

Can I use this to calculate how much I will receive after a Wise transfer?

Use our converter to get the gross mid-market amount. Then subtract Wise's transfer fee (visible on their site before you confirm the transfer) to get the net amount received. The fee structure varies by amount and currency pair.

Does this replace a Wise account for everyday use?

For checking rates: yes. For actually sending money: no — you still need Wise or a similar service to move funds. Our converter is a research tool, not a transfer service.
