Resize + Compress Workflow (Hit Exact KB Targets)

Resizing alone changes pixel dimensions. To also hit a file size target:

  1. Resize to your target dimensions (e.g., 600x600 for passport)
  2. Compress at Medium quality — check the resulting file size
  3. If still too large, drop to Low quality or try WebP format via the converter

Inches to Pixels Conversion

Pixels = inches × DPI (dots per inch). Common DPI values:

Aspect Ratio — When to Lock and When to Unlock

Use the aspect ratio calculator to find matching dimensions that maintain your original ratio.

Passport and ID Photos — Complete Workflow

  1. Take the photo against a plain white or light background
  2. Crop to center the face with proper spacing (head 50-69% of frame height)
  3. Resize to the required dimensions (600x600 for US, 413x531 for EU)
  4. If the form requires under 100KB: compress at Medium quality
  5. If the form requires a white background: use the background remover then add white background

Downsizing vs Upsizing — Quality Impact

Downsizing (smaller)✓ No quality lossAny amount4000x3000 → 600x600 = perfect
Upsizing 25-50%~Slight softening150% of original800x600 → 1200x900 = acceptable
Upsizing 100%+✗ Noticeable blurNot recommended400x300 → 800x600 = blurry
Upsizing 200%+✗ Very blurryAvoid200x200 → 600x600 = unusable for print
