Percentage Calculator for Students — Grades, Attendance & Exam Scores
Table of Contents
Percentage calculations come up constantly in school — converting test scores to grades, figuring out your attendance percentage, or calculating what you need on your final exam to pass the course. Here's how to do all of them with the free Percentage Calculator.
Calculate Your Grade Percentage
To find your grade as a percentage: (Points Earned ÷ Total Points) × 100
Use the calculator's "X is what % of Y?" mode — enter points earned as X, total possible points as Y.
| Score | Out Of | Percentage | Letter Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| 45 | 50 | 90% | A |
| 37 | 50 | 74% | C |
| 84 | 100 | 84% | B |
| 23 | 40 | 57.5% | F |
| 17 | 20 | 85% | B |
Calculate Attendance Percentage
Attendance percentage = (Days Present ÷ Total School Days) × 100
Example: Present 42 days out of 50 total → 42 is what % of 50 → 84% attendance.
Many schools require 75–80% attendance to avoid academic consequences. If you need to know how many more days you can miss:
Max absences = Total Days × (1 - Required Attendance %)
Example: 180 school days, 80% required → 180 × 0.20 = 36 max absences before penalties.

To find the score you need on your remaining tests or final exam:
- Calculate your current total points earned and total points possible so far
- Add the remaining exam's point value to the total possible
- Calculate what score would give you the passing percentage you need
Formula: Needed Score = (Required Final % × Total Points Possible) - Current Points Earned
Example: You have 280/350 points (80%). Your final exam is worth 100 points. You want at least 85% overall. Total possible = 450. Points needed overall = 0.85 × 450 = 382.5. Points already earned = 280. Final exam needed = 382.5 - 280 = 102.5 — you'd need 102.5/100, which isn't possible, so 85% isn't achievable in this scenario.
Use the Percentage Calculator for the individual steps — plug in the numbers at each stage.
Calculate Percentage Marks from Total
For courses that report marks (not points), the calculation is the same:
- You scored 78 marks out of 100 total → 78%
- You scored 342 marks out of 500 total → (342 ÷ 500) × 100 = 68.4%
- You scored 45 out of 75 in one subject and 62 out of 100 in another → combine: (45 + 62) ÷ (75 + 100) = 107/175 = 61.14% overall
Use the "X is what % of Y?" mode — X = marks scored, Y = total marks possible.

How do I calculate my grade percentage?
Divide points earned by total possible points, then multiply by 100. Example: 45/50 = 0.9 × 100 = 90%. Use the "X is what % of Y?" mode in the Percentage Calculator — enter your score as X and total points as Y.
What is 80% attendance out of 180 days?
80% of 180 days = 144 days minimum required. You can miss a maximum of 36 days before falling below 80% attendance.
How do I calculate the percentage I need on my final exam?
Use this formula: Needed Final Score = (Required Final Grade % × Total Possible Points) - Points Already Earned. Then divide by the final exam point value to get the percentage needed on the exam itself.
