Browser Tool vs Video Editors for Merging
| Method | Install | Learning Curve | Merge Speed | Cost |
|---|
| Premiere Pro | 3GB+ | Steep — timeline required | ✓ Fast | $22.99/mo |
| DaVinci Resolve | 2GB+ | Moderate | ✓ Fast | Free (limited) |
| iMovie | Pre-installed (Mac) | Low-moderate | ✓ Fast | Free (Mac only) |
| Kapwing (web) | None | Low | ~Server processing | Free (watermark) |
| Browser-local tool | ✓ None | ✓ Drag and drop | ✓ Local processing | Free — no watermark |
For simple merging (join clips end-to-end), a video editor is overkill. The browser tool does the job in 3 clicks.
Tips for Clean Merges
- Match resolutions: If mixing clips from different sources, resize them to the same resolution first. 1080p is a safe standard
- Trim first: Trim each clip to remove dead time at the start/end before merging. Cleaner result
- Check audio levels: Clips from different sources may have different volume levels. Use Adjust Volume to normalize
- Compress after: Merged files are large (sum of all clips). Compress the final output if needed for sharing
File Size Expectations
The merged file is roughly the sum of all input files. Examples:
| Input | Merged Size | After Compression |
|---|
| 5 clips × 20MB each | ~100MB | 30-50MB |
| 3 clips × 50MB each | ~150MB | 50-75MB |
| 10 clips × 10MB each | ~100MB | 30-50MB |
| 2 clips × 200MB each | ~400MB | 120-200MB |
If the merged file is too large for your needs, compress it or reduce resolution afterward.
