Korean Age vs International Age — How to Convert and Why It Changed

In Korean age, a baby born December 31 is "2 years old" the next day. South Korea officially abandoned this system in June 2023, switching to international age. Why South Korea Changed

The Korean age system created real problems:

• Medical confusion: A premature baby born in December was "2 years old" in January — creating dosage and developmental milestone problems when Korean age was used instead of actual age
• Legal confusion: Age requirements for alcohol (19 in Korea), military service, and school enrollment used different age systems depending on the law. Some used Korean age, some used international age, some used a third "counting age" (year-based, no +1 at birth)
• International confusion: A 30-year-old Korean was 28 internationally. Passport age and social age were always different. This caused issues in travel, work visas, and international communication

The June 2023 law unified everything under international age. Korean age is now cultural only — used in casual conversation but not in any official capacity.
