Korean Age vs International Age — How to Convert and Why It Changed

Last updated: April 20266 min readCalculator Tools

In Korean age, a baby born December 31 is "2 years old" the next day. South Korea officially abandoned this system in June 2023, switching to international age. If your Korean age is 30, your international age is 28 or 29. Use the age calculator for your exact international age, then add 1-2 for Korean age.

Korean Age vs International Age — The Math

BornInternational Age (Apr 2026)Korean Age (Traditional)Difference

Quick conversion: Your Korean age = International age + 1 (if your birthday has passed this year) or + 2 (if it has not).

Why South Korea Changed

The Korean age system created real problems:

The June 2023 law unified everything under international age. Korean age is now cultural only — used in casual conversation but not in any official capacity.

Converting Between Calendar Systems

The age calculator uses the Gregorian calendar (the international standard). To calculate age in other calendar systems:

  1. Convert your birthday to Gregorian dates (e.g., Nepali date → Gregorian equivalent)
  2. Enter the Gregorian date into the age calculator
  3. Read your international age — this is your actual chronological age regardless of calendar
  4. For Korean age: add 1 (if birthday passed) or 2 (if not)

Your physical age is the same regardless of which calendar you use — calendars are naming conventions, not time machines.
