How to Fix an Upside Down PDF (Rotate and Save)
- An upside-down PDF needs a 180-degree rotation to fix
- Click one button, download the corrected file
- Works for scanned documents, saved PDFs, and email attachments
- Free, permanent fix -- the file stays corrected when shared
Table of Contents
An upside-down PDF is a 180-degree rotation away from being right-side up. Drop it into the Rotate PDF tool, click "180 degrees," download. The fix is permanent — anyone who opens the file sees it correctly.
This happens more often than you would expect. Flatbed scanners that read the sheet from the wrong end. PDF printers that flip the output. Documents emailed from phones where the orientation metadata got scrambled. The cause varies but the fix is always the same: rotate 180 degrees and save.
Fix It in Three Clicks
Click 1: Open the Rotate PDF tool and select your file.
Click 2: Click the "180 degrees" button. Every page flips right-side up.
Click 3: Click "Apply & Download." Done.
If only some pages are upside down (common with duplex scanning), click the individual thumbnail of each upside-down page twice instead. Two clicks = 180 degrees for that page only.
Common Causes of Upside-Down PDFs
- Scanner orientation: Many office scanners have a document feeder that reads from the bottom. If you insert the paper face-up instead of face-down, the scan comes out upside down.
- Duplex scanning: The scanner flips each sheet to scan the back, and sometimes the back-side scan is inverted. You get a PDF where every other page is upside down.
- PDF printer drivers: Some virtual PDF printers (especially on older Windows systems) invert the output. The file looks fine on screen during printing but the saved PDF is flipped.
- Email attachment corruption: Rare, but some email systems strip or modify PDF rotation metadata, causing the file to display upside down on the recipient's end.
- Phone scans: Scanning apps on phones use the camera orientation sensor. If the sensor misreads the phone position, the resulting PDF is inverted.
Scanned PDFs That Came Out Upside Down
Scanned documents are the most common source of upside-down PDFs. The scanner creates an image-based PDF where each page is essentially a photograph of the paper. The orientation depends entirely on how the paper was fed.
For a single-sided scan where everything is upside down: use "Rotate All 180 degrees."
For a duplex scan where every other page is flipped: click each inverted page thumbnail twice (180 degrees per page). This is manual but accurate. For PDFs under 30 pages, it takes less than a minute.
After fixing the orientation, you might also want to run the document through PDF OCR to make the scanned text searchable and copyable. Rotation should happen first — OCR accuracy improves when the text is right-side up.
The Rotation Sticks — Permanently
A common frustration: you rotate a PDF in a viewer, close the file, reopen it, and it is upside down again. This happens because the viewer rotated the display but did not change the file.
Our tool modifies the rotation property in the PDF's page structure. The output file contains the updated rotation as part of its data. Every PDF reader on every operating system will display it correctly. There is no "view rotation" that resets — the fix is permanent in the file itself.
Test it yourself: download the corrected file, open it in a completely different application (Chrome, Edge, Preview, Adobe Reader), and confirm the pages are right-side up.

Open Free Rotate PDF ToolFrequently Asked Questions
My PDF is upside down. What do I do?
Open the Rotate PDF tool, drop your file, click the 180-degree button, download. The fix takes about 10 seconds and is permanent.
Why does my scanned PDF keep coming out upside down?
Your scanner is reading the paper from the opposite end. Try inserting the paper face-down instead of face-up, or flip the stack 180 degrees before feeding it.
Can I fix just some upside-down pages?
Yes. Click individual page thumbnails twice each (180 degrees) for just the pages that are flipped. Other pages remain unchanged.
Why did my PDF viewer not save the rotation?
Most PDF viewers (Adobe Reader, Edge, Chrome) only rotate the display view. They do not modify the actual file. Use a dedicated rotation tool to permanently change the orientation.
