Barcode Generator for Small Business, Shopify & Amazon Sellers (2026)

Last updated: April 20268 min readGenerator Tools

You are launching a product and every platform has different barcode requirements. Amazon needs a UPC to list. Shopify POS needs a barcode to scan. Etsy does not care. Here is exactly what you need for each platform, what it costs, and how to generate the barcode image for free.

Amazon FBA — The Full Barcode Process

  1. Register with GS1 ($250 for 10 UPC numbers at gs1.org)
  2. Assign UPC numbers to each product variation (size, color = separate UPC)
  3. Create Amazon listing using your UPC number
  4. Amazon generates FNSKU — their internal warehouse tracking code
  5. Generate UPC barcode image with Barcode Generator for product packaging
  6. Print FNSKU labels from Amazon Seller Central for FBA shipments

The UPC goes on your product packaging (visible to the customer). The FNSKU goes on top of or alongside the UPC for Amazon warehouse scanning.

Shopify — When You Need Barcodes

Shopify Use CaseNeed Barcode?Action
Online store only, no POSOptionalSkip barcodes initially — add later if needed
Shopify POS (retail store)YesUPC for each product — enables scanner checkout
Google Shopping integrationYesGoogle requires GTIN (UPC/EAN) for product listings
Facebook/Instagram ShoppingRecommendedImproves product matching and ad performance
Wholesale to retail partnersYesRetailers require UPC for their POS systems
Inventory management with scannerYesUse UPC or Code 128 for warehouse scanning

If you are starting with Shopify online-only, you can always add barcodes later. But if Google Shopping or POS is in your plans, register with GS1 early — the numbers are yours permanently.

The GS1 vs Reseller Decision

This decision affects every platform:

The $200 you save buying from a reseller can cost you thousands when your Amazon listings get deactivated. Every seller subreddit warns against this.
