You are launching a product and every platform has different barcode requirements. Amazon needs a UPC to list. Shopify POS needs a barcode to scan. Etsy does not care. Here is exactly what you need for each platform, what it costs, and how to generate the barcode image for free.
| Platform | Barcode Required? | Which Format? | Where to Get Numbers | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon FBA | Yes — for product listing | UPC-A (or GTIN exemption) | GS1 (gs1.org) | $250 + $50/yr |
| Amazon Handmade | ~GTIN exemption available | UPC-A if no exemption | GS1 or apply for exemption | $0-250 |
| Shopify (online only) | ~Optional | UPC-A recommended | GS1 | $0-250 |
| Shopify POS (in-store) | Yes — for scanning | UPC-A | GS1 | $250 + $50/yr |
| Shopify → Google Shopping | Yes — required | UPC-A or EAN-13 | GS1 | $250 + $50/yr |
| Etsy | ✓ Not required | N/A | N/A | $0 |
| Etsy → Wholesale/Retail | Yes — retailers require it | UPC-A | GS1 | $250 + $50/yr |
| Walmart Marketplace | Yes — required | UPC-A | GS1 | $250 + $50/yr |
| Your own website only | ✓ Not required | N/A | N/A | $0 |
| Craft fairs / farmers market | ✓ Not required | N/A | N/A | $0 |
The UPC goes on your product packaging (visible to the customer). The FNSKU goes on top of or alongside the UPC for Amazon warehouse scanning.
| Shopify Use Case | Need Barcode? | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Online store only, no POS | Optional | Skip barcodes initially — add later if needed |
| Shopify POS (retail store) | Yes | UPC for each product — enables scanner checkout |
| Google Shopping integration | Yes | Google requires GTIN (UPC/EAN) for product listings |
| Facebook/Instagram Shopping | Recommended | Improves product matching and ad performance |
| Wholesale to retail partners | Yes | Retailers require UPC for their POS systems |
| Inventory management with scanner | Yes | Use UPC or Code 128 for warehouse scanning |
If you are starting with Shopify online-only, you can always add barcodes later. But if Google Shopping or POS is in your plans, register with GS1 early — the numbers are yours permanently.
This decision affects every platform:
The $200 you save buying from a reseller can cost you thousands when your Amazon listings get deactivated. Every seller subreddit warns against this.
Once you have your UPC number (from GS1) or internal tracking number:
| Products | Variations per Product | Total UPCs Needed | GS1 Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-3 products | 2-3 each (size/color) | 3-9 | 10 numbers ($250) |
| 5-10 products | 2-3 each | 10-30 | 100 numbers ($750) |
| 10-25 products | 3-5 each | 30-125 | 100 numbers ($750) |
| 25-50 products | 3-5 each | 75-250 | 1,000 numbers ($2,500) |
| 50+ products | Multiple variations | 250+ | 1,000 numbers ($2,500) |
Plan for growth. Each new color, size, or variation needs its own number. Starting with 10 numbers and upgrading later is fine — GS1 lets you expand your capacity.
