Adobe Color Alternative — Generate Palettes Without Creative Cloud

Last updated: April 20267 min readColor Tools

Adobe Color is a capable palette tool attached to an ecosystem most people do not need for picking colors. If you use Photoshop or Illustrator daily, the Creative Cloud integration is valuable. If you need a color palette and do not use CC — which is most developers, students, and casual designers — an Adobe account is unnecessary overhead.

When Adobe Color Is the Right Choice

Adobe Color is not bad — it is misapplied. Here is when it genuinely makes sense:

When a Free Alternative Is Better

The Color Wheel Is a Color Wheel

A color wheel shows 360 degrees of hue with saturation and lightness controls. The mathematical relationships between complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary, and monochromatic colors are identical regardless of which tool renders the wheel. Adobe Color did not invent these relationships — they are properties of light.

What differentiates tools is what happens after you pick colors:

The wheel is the same. The workflow around it is different. Pick the tool that matches your workflow.

Migrating From Adobe Color

There is nothing to migrate. Adobe Color palettes are hex codes. Open your saved palette in Adobe Color, note the hex values, and enter them into any other tool. If you have palettes in CC libraries, open any Adobe app, go to your library, and copy the color values.

You are not locked in. Colors are universal. The hex code #2563EB is the same blue in Adobe Color, Coolors, Figma, CSS, and every other tool on the planet.
