When Adobe Color Is the Right Choice

Adobe Color is not bad — it is misapplied. Here is when it genuinely makes sense:

• You use Photoshop, Illustrator, or XD. The ability to save a palette in Adobe Color and have it appear automatically in your CC app swatches is a legitimate workflow improvement. No export step, no manual hex copying.
• You want trend research. Adobe Color Trends pulls from Adobe Stock and Behance to surface seasonal and industry color trends. This data is unique to Adobe. No free tool replicates it.
• You need image theme extraction. Upload a photo and Adobe Color identifies the dominant color themes. The algorithm is well-tuned and the interface lets you control which colors to prioritize. It is one of the better implementations of this feature.
• You already have an Adobe account. If you pay for Creative Cloud anyway, Adobe Color is free additional value. Using it costs nothing beyond the CC subscription you already have.

When a Free Alternative Is Better

• You are a developer. You need hex codes in your CSS or Tailwind config. Adobe Color does not export CSS custom properties. You would copy hex codes manually and format them yourself. A developer-focused tool does this in one click.
