Your password is converted into a 256-bit cryptographic key using PBKDF2 (Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2) with 100,000 iterations and a random salt. The text is then encrypted using AES-256 in GCM mode, which provides both confidentiality and integrity verification. A random IV (initialization vector) ensures the same text+password produces different encrypted output each time. The salt, IV, and ciphertext are combined into a single Base64 string.
Share passwords, API keys, or sensitive information over insecure channels (email, Slack, SMS). Send the encrypted text through the channel and share the password through a different channel (phone call, in person). Even if the encrypted text is intercepted, it's useless without the password.
