How does the file compressor reduce image size?

The compressor re-encodes your image at a lower quality setting. For JPG files, it uses lossy compression to dramatically reduce size. For PNG files with transparency, it preserves the alpha channel automatically. The tool detects whether your image has transparency and picks the best output format — so you never lose transparency by accident.
