YouTube's category browse bar — the row of filter chips at the top of the homepage showing "All," "Gaming," "Music," "Live," and so on — changed significantly in 2022. Many users noticed the traditional category labels disappeared from the homepage interface and assumed that YouTube categories as a system were removed. They were not.

Here is exactly what changed, what stayed the same, and why video upload categories still matter even though the homepage browse interface looks different.

What YouTube Actually Changed About Categories

YouTube replaced the static category filter row on the homepage with a dynamic "chip" system that personalizes suggested topic filters based on your watch history. Instead of fixed labels like "Sports" or "Gaming," the homepage now shows personalized topic chips like "Python tutorials," "F1 highlights," or "Baking" based on what you typically watch.

This change removed the public-facing category navigation that let anyone browse all YouTube content by a fixed category label. But it did not remove the underlying category system used for video uploads, advertising targeting, and the YouTube data source.

The category bar that creators use in YouTube Studio to categorize their uploads — Howto & Style, Gaming, Education, and the other 12 categories — still exists and still functions exactly as it did before. The change was to the viewer-facing homepage navigation, not to the upload-side categorization system.

What Video Categories Still Do After the Change

Despite the homepage navigation change, per-video categories still perform three important functions:

Monetization targeting: Advertisers still target by content category when buying YouTube ad inventory. Finance advertisers, gaming hardware companies, and B2B software companies all use category targeting to reach the right audiences. This means the category you assign to your video still directly affects which advertisers bid on your inventory and therefore your CPM and RPM.

Algorithm grouping: YouTube's recommendation engine still uses category as one signal when identifying which pool of videos to compare yours against. A cooking tutorial in Howto & Style competes in a different recommendation pool than the same video filed under Entertainment.

API queries: Developers and researchers querying the YouTube data source can still filter video searches by category ID. Tools that categorize channels, analyze content distribution, or build playlists by topic still rely on these IDs.

How to Check What Category a Video Is Currently Filed Under

YouTube Studio still shows your own videos' categories under Details in the More Options section. For videos on other channels, the YouTube Category Checker above lets you paste any URL and see the official category name and numeric ID in seconds.

This is useful for verifying your own uploads saved the correct category, researching what categories top-performing videos in your niche use, and confirming that the category system still functions correctly for a specific video after the homepage navigation changes.

The category returned by the checker is the actual value stored in YouTube's database — unaffected by the homepage UI changes.

The New Personalized Topic Chip System

The personalized topic chips that replaced the category bar are generated dynamically by YouTube's recommendation engine based on your viewing history. They are not fixed categories — they reflect topics and channels the algorithm predicts you are likely to engage with.

These chips do not correspond one-to-one with the 15 upload categories. A chip might say "Python" or "Lo-fi music" rather than "Education" or "Music." They are discovery aids personalized to individual users, not a browsable taxonomy of all YouTube content.

If you miss the ability to browse YouTube by a fixed content category, the upload category system is not the mechanism for that anymore. Instead, YouTube's search with keyword filters, the Explore tab, and dedicated channel subscriptions are the browsing tools the platform now emphasizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did YouTube remove video categories for uploads?

No. Video upload categories in YouTube Studio were not removed. The 15 content categories — Howto & Style, Gaming, Education, Sports, and the rest — are still available in the Details section of every video in YouTube Studio. Only the homepage category browse bar changed.

Can I still filter YouTube search results by category?

The standard YouTube search interface does not prominently expose category filters. You can filter by upload date, duration, and type, but not by upload category through the main UI. The YouTube data source allows category-filtered searches via the categoryId parameter for developers building search-based tools.

Why does my YouTube category bar look different?

The category chips at the top of your YouTube homepage are now personalized based on your watch history — they show topics YouTube predicts you will engage with rather than a fixed list of all categories. Clearing your watch history or using a fresh account shows more generic topic chips.
