Last updated: April 20265 min readCalculator Tools

YNAB is a good product. But $99/year for a budgeting app is a hard sell when the core function — splitting your income into categories — can be done with a free calculator in 10 seconds. Here is what YNAB actually does, what you get for free, and how to decide.

The YNAB Philosophy — For Free

YNAB teaches four rules. You can follow all of them without YNAB:

  1. "Give every dollar a job" — Decide what each dollar does before you spend it. A 50/30/20 calculator does this with three categories instead of twenty. Simpler but same principle
  2. "Embrace your true expenses" — Annual costs (insurance, car registration) divided by 12 and included monthly. You can do this math yourself or in a spreadsheet
  3. "Roll with the punches" — When you overspend in one category, pull from another. Works the same way whether you are using YNAB or checking your bank statement
  4. "Age your money" — Spend last month's income, not this month's. This is about building a one-month buffer. A savings calculator shows you when you will get there
