Canva has no word counter. Google Slides has no word counter. PowerPoint has one, but it's buried under the Review tab and it only appears in the desktop app — not in the browser version. If you're working on a presentation with a word count requirement, or you need to check your script against a speaking time target, the fastest method across all three tools is the same: copy all your text, paste it here, and get an instant count.

Getting Word Count in Canva (No Native Feature)

Canva does not have a built-in word counter as of 2026. The quickest workaround:

  1. Open your Canva design
  2. Click on each text element and use Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac) to select all text in that element
  3. Copy all selected text with Ctrl+C
  4. Paste into the free word counter below
  5. Repeat for each text element if needed

If your Canva design has many text boxes, the faster approach: download your design as a PDF, open in Adobe Reader, use Ctrl+A to select all text, then copy-paste into the counter.

For large Canva documents like decks or ebooks: download as PDF, then use the PDF copy method. You'll get all text in one paste rather than going text-box by text-box.

Finding Word Count in PowerPoint

Desktop PowerPoint (Windows and Mac) has a native word count under the Review tab:

  1. Open your presentation in PowerPoint desktop
  2. Click the Review tab in the ribbon
  3. Click Word Count in the Proofing group
  4. A dialog shows words, characters (with and without spaces), paragraphs, and slides

This works for the full presentation including speaker notes. To count only the slide text (excluding notes), there's no direct toggle — but the difference is usually small enough that the total count is useful for most purposes.

PowerPoint Online (browser): Does not have a word count feature. Use the copy-paste method: Ctrl+A to select all slides' text, copy, paste here.

Getting Word Count in Google Slides (No Native Feature)

Google Slides — unlike Google Docs — does not have a word count tool. There is no menu item, no keyboard shortcut, and no add-on that replicates it natively.

Two workarounds:

  1. Download and count: File > Download > Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx). Open in PowerPoint desktop and use Review > Word Count.
  2. Copy-paste method: Click on a text box, Ctrl+A to select all text in that box, Ctrl+C to copy, then Ctrl+V into the word counter below. Repeat for each slide's text boxes.

For a presentation with speaker notes that you need to count separately, use the download approach — the PowerPoint word count dialog shows notes as a separate figure.

When Does Presentation Word Count Actually Matter?

Word count in presentations matters in a few specific scenarios:

For most slide-based presentations, the copy-paste method is fast enough. For bulk audits across many files, PowerPoint's native word count via the Review tab is the most efficient approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a word count tool in Canva?

No. As of 2026, Canva does not include a built-in word counter. To count words in a Canva design, copy text from each text element and paste it into a free word counter tool, or download your design as a PDF and extract the text from there.

Does Google Slides have a word count feature?

No. Google Slides does not have a native word count feature, unlike Google Docs which has one under Tools > Word Count. The workarounds are: copy text from slides and paste into a word counter, or download as .pptx and check in PowerPoint desktop.

How do I count words in a PowerPoint presentation?

In PowerPoint desktop: click the Review tab in the ribbon, then click Word Count. This shows total words, characters, paragraphs, slides, and notes. PowerPoint Online does not have this feature — download the file and open it in the desktop app to access word count.

Can I get a word count for PowerPoint speaker notes separately?

PowerPoint's built-in word count includes all text: slide content plus speaker notes combined. There's no direct way to get notes-only or slides-only word count from the built-in tool. To count notes separately, copy just the notes text from the Notes view and paste into a separate word counter.
