Printify accepts designs up to 12000 × 12000 px and recommends 300 DPI. Redbubble shows a warning if your file is below their quality threshold. Both platforms process millions of orders and have strict size requirements to ensure print quality.

Here's what both platforms actually require — and how to check your file before you upload.

Printify T-Shirt Design Requirements

Printify's requirements vary by print provider, but their guidelines for t-shirts follow these standards:

PlacementMinimum SizeRecommended SizeFormat
Full front / back1800 × 2400 px (150 DPI)3600 × 4800 px (300 DPI)PNG or JPG
Chest (left / right)600 × 600 px1200 × 1200 pxPNG
Sleeve900 × 1500 px1800 × 3000 pxPNG

Printify recommends PNG with transparent background for designs without a solid white fill. JPG is fine for designs with a white or colored background, but any transparent areas will become white.

Some Printify print providers (like Printify Choice, Dimona Tee, or Fulfill Engine) have specific requirements — check the provider's page in the product editor for exact specs.

Redbubble T-Shirt Design Requirements

Redbubble uses a single design file that scales across all products. For t-shirts, their recommendations:

ParameterRedbubble Requirement
Minimum size1024 px on shortest side
Recommended4800 × 6000 px (for max-quality on all products)
FormatPNG (transparent) or JPG
Maximum file size300 MB

Redbubble's quality warning appears if your design is below their internal threshold. To avoid the warning and pass review, use at least 3600 × 4800 px for t-shirt designs. The quality indicator in their upload interface turns green when your file is large enough.

Gelato and Print Aura Requirements

Gelato: Recommends 4500 × 5400 px for full-front t-shirt prints (their default template size). Minimum acceptable is around 150 DPI at print size. Accepts PNG and PDF.

Print Aura: Recommends designs at least 4500 × 5400 px for full front. Minimum 150 DPI. PNG with transparent background preferred.

The sizing logic is the same across all platforms: 300 DPI at your intended print size is the gold standard. If you build to 300 DPI for a 12 × 16 inch area (3600 × 4800 px), you'll pass every platform's quality check.

How to Check Your Design Before Uploading to Any Platform

Instead of uploading and hoping for the best, use the Print Size Calculator first:

  1. Select your product (t-shirt) and print area (full front, chest, etc.)
  2. Upload your design file — the tool checks its pixel dimensions locally in your browser
  3. Get an instant Pass/Warning/Fail result with recommended pixel sizes

This saves time and avoids uploading a file that a platform rejects or prints poorly. Your design file is never sent to any server — the check runs 100% in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What file format does Printify require for t-shirt designs?

Printify accepts PNG and JPG. PNG is preferred for designs with transparent backgrounds. For designs with text or fine details, PNG produces sharper results than JPG.

Why does Redbubble say my design quality is low?

Redbubble's quality indicator reflects the pixel dimensions relative to their print size. If you get a low-quality warning, your file is below their threshold — usually below about 150 DPI at print size. Resize your design to at least 3600 × 4800 px for t-shirts.

Do I need a different file for each POD platform?

Not necessarily. A 3600 × 4800 px PNG at 300 DPI works on Printify, Redbubble, Gelato, Print Aura, and most other platforms. Check each platform's specific placement guidelines, but the same file usually works across all of them.
