T-Shirt Design Size Guide: Front, Back & Pocket Print Dimensions
Table of Contents
Upload a file that's too small and it prints blurry. Upload one that's too big and some platforms auto-crop it wrong. Getting the size right before you upload saves time, reprints, and frustrated customers.
This guide covers every standard print placement on a t-shirt — front chest, full front, full back, pocket, and sleeve — with the exact inch dimensions and pixel requirements at 300 DPI (the professional standard for sharp prints).
Why Print Size Matters for T-Shirts
DTG (direct-to-garment) and screen printing both have specific print areas — physical zones where ink can be applied. If your design extends beyond those zones, it gets clipped. If it's too small, it looks unintentionally small on the shirt. If your file resolution is too low, the print looks pixelated even if the dimensions are right.
The three numbers that matter: print area in inches, recommended pixel size at 300 DPI, and minimum pixel size at 150 DPI. Our free print size calculator shows all three for every product instantly.
Full Front Print — The Most Common Placement
Full front is the standard placement for most custom t-shirts. The design spans the front torso and is the most visible placement.
| Shirt Size | Print Area (inches) | 300 DPI (recommended) | 150 DPI (minimum) |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS–S | 11 × 14" | 3300 × 4200 px | 1650 × 2100 px |
| M–L | 12 × 16" | 3600 × 4800 px | 1800 × 2400 px |
| XL–2XL | 13 × 17" | 3900 × 5100 px | 1950 × 2550 px |
| 3XL+ | 14 × 18" | 4200 × 5400 px | 2100 × 2700 px |
Pro tip: Most POD platforms use the M/L dimensions (12 × 16") as the template size. If you size your design for 3600 × 4800 px, it scales correctly across all sizes.
Chest (Left) Print — Small Logo Placement
The left chest placement is used for logos, small graphics, or emblem-style designs. It sits roughly where a breast pocket would be.
| Placement | Print Area (inches) | 300 DPI | 150 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small chest logo | 3.5 × 3.5" | 1050 × 1050 px | 525 × 525 px |
| Standard chest | 4 × 4" | 1200 × 1200 px | 600 × 600 px |
| Large chest | 5 × 5" | 1500 × 1500 px | 750 × 750 px |
Chest prints work well for simple logos and wordmarks. Complex illustrations with fine detail need at least 300 DPI to render cleanly at this small size.

Back prints use the same dimensions as front prints. The key difference is placement — back designs start lower (below the collar) and end above the hem.
| Back Placement | Print Area (inches) | 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|
| Standard full back | 12 × 16" | 3600 × 4800 px |
| Upper back only | 12 × 6" | 3600 × 1800 px |
| Name/number block | 10 × 4" | 3000 × 1200 px |
For designs with text (team names, player numbers), make sure your font size is large enough to read after scaling. A 72pt font at 300 DPI on a full-back design usually renders cleanly.
Sleeve & Pocket Print Dimensions
Sleeve and pocket prints are smaller and require higher relative resolution because small imperfections are more visible at close range.
| Placement | Print Area (inches) | 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeve (standard) | 3 × 5" | 900 × 1500 px |
| Sleeve (wide) | 4 × 6" | 1200 × 1800 px |
| Pocket area | 4 × 4" | 1200 × 1200 px |
Sleeve prints often wrap around the arm, so horizontal designs work better than vertical ones for sleeve placements.
How to Check Your File Before Uploading
Instead of guessing, use the Print Size Calculator to check any file in seconds:

What is the standard t-shirt print size?
The standard full-front print area is 12 × 16 inches for adult sizes (M/L). At 300 DPI, your design file should be 3600 × 4800 pixels. Smaller placements like chest logos are typically 4 × 4 inches (1200 × 1200 px at 300 DPI).
Can I use the same design file for front and back?
Yes, if both use the same dimensions. Full-front and full-back prints use the same 12 × 16 inch area, so one 3600 × 4800 px file works for both placements.
What happens if my file is below 150 DPI?
Prints below 150 DPI will look visibly blurry or pixelated on the finished garment. Most POD platforms and print shops will warn you or reject the file. 300 DPI is always the safe target.
Do youth and kids shirts use different print sizes?
Yes — smaller shirts have smaller print areas. A youth small typically has a front print area of about 9 × 11 inches. The print size calculator shows the correct dimensions for every size category.
