Mac has QuickTime (limited formats). Windows has nothing. Chromebook has nothing. But all three can trim audio instantly in the browser — no software installation needed.

Open Audio Trimmer

Mac: Trim Audio Files

Option 1: QuickTime Player (Built-in — Limited)

  1. Right-click the audio file → Open With → QuickTime Player
  2. Edit → Trim (or Cmd+T)
  3. Drag the yellow handles to select your section
  4. Trim → File → Save

Limitation: QuickTime cannot open MP3 files for editing. It works with M4A, WAV, and AIFF. For MP3 files (the most common audio format), use the browser trimmer or GarageBand.

Option 2: Browser Trimmer (All Formats)

  1. Open the audio trimmer in Safari or Chrome
  2. Drop your audio file (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC)
  3. Set start and end timestamps
  4. Download the trimmed clip

Windows: Trim Audio Files

Windows 10 and 11 have no built-in audio trimmer. The Voice Recorder app records audio but cannot edit it. Your options:

Option 1: Browser Trimmer (No Install)

Open the trimmer in Chrome or Edge. Drop the file, set timestamps, download. Takes 15 seconds, no installation.

Option 2: Install Audacity

Download Audacity (free), open your file, select the region, Edit → Remove Audio → Trim. Audacity is powerful but requires a 50MB install — worth it if you edit audio regularly, overkill for a single trim.

Chromebook: Trim Audio Files

ChromeOS cannot run desktop audio editors. The browser-based trimmer is the primary option — and it works perfectly since Chromebooks run Chrome natively. Open the tool, drop your file, trim, download.

Alternative: install an Android audio editor from the Play Store if your Chromebook supports Android apps. But browser-based is simpler and has no storage overhead.
