Text Design for T-Shirts & Merch — Free Transparent PNG Download

Last updated: April 20268 min readDesign Tools

The best-selling t-shirt designs are not always illustrations. "Just Do It" is text. "I Heart NY" is mostly text. "Keep Calm and Carry On" is entirely text. Half the shirts on Amazon and Etsy are a bold font with a funny quote or brand name. You don't need a graphic designer for a text-based shirt — you need the right font and a transparent PNG.

How to Make T-Shirt Text (5 Steps)

  1. Open the Text Designer.
  2. Type your quote, slogan, or brand name. Short, punchy text works best on shirts. Two lines max for most designs.
  3. Choose a bold font:
    • Statement tee: Anton, Bangers, or Archivo Black
    • Vintage/retro: Teko or Staatliches
    • Handwritten look: Permanent Marker
    • College/athletic: Bebas Neue or Oswald with a curve
    • Premium brand: Montserrat or Raleway with wide letter spacing
  4. Set a high-contrast color. White for dark shirts. Black for light shirts. Or choose a bold color if you know the shirt color.
  5. Download as transparent PNG. Upload directly to your print platform.

Print-on-Demand Requirements

If you're uploading to a print-on-demand platform (Printful, Printify, Merch by Amazon, Redbubble, TeeSpring), here's what they need:

Design Tips for T-Shirt Text

Keep it short

The best-selling text tees have 1-5 words. Long sentences don't read well on a moving surface (a person's torso). "DOG DAD" works. A 15-word inspirational quote in 8pt font does not.

Test readability at a distance

After you create the text, zoom out on your screen. If you can read it from arm's length on a monitor, it'll read from a few feet away on a shirt. If you squint, increase the font weight or switch to a bolder typeface.

Use outline for versatility

Adding a contrasting outline around the text means the same design works on more shirt colors. White text with a black outline is visible on nearly any shirt color. Without the outline, white text disappears on a light shirt.

Curve text for an athletic look

A gentle upward arc on the brand or team name gives that classic collegiate/athletic feel. Don't overdo the curve — a slight bend works better than a full semicircle on a shirt. See our curved text guide for details on getting the arc right.
