The formula is simple: Annual Salary / Work Hours Per Year. But the details matter. How many weeks do you actually work? Does your company pay for vacation? Are you comparing to an hourly job or a freelance rate? Here's how to get it right.
Hourly Rate = Annual Salary / (Hours per Week x Weeks per Year)
For a standard full-time schedule: 40 hours x 52 weeks = 2,080 work hours per year.

The "50 weeks" column accounts for 2 weeks of unpaid time off. If your employer provides paid vacation, use 52 weeks because you are paid for those weeks too.
This distinction changes a $75,000 salary from $36.06/hour (52 weeks) to $39.06/hour (48 weeks). A $3/hour difference just from counting weeks correctly.
Multiply: Hourly Rate x Hours per Week x Weeks per Year.
| Hourly rate | Annual (40h, 52wk) | Monthly | Biweekly |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15 | $31,200 | $2,600 | $1,200 |
| $20 | $41,600 | $3,467 | $1,600 |
| $25 | $52,000 | $4,333 | $2,000 |
| $30 | $62,400 | $5,200 | $2,400 |
| $40 | $83,200 | $6,933 | $3,200 |
| $50 | $104,000 | $8,667 | $4,000 |
If you regularly work 45 or 50 hours per week, your effective hourly rate is lower than the formula suggests. A $60,000 salary at 50 hours/week is not $28.85/hour. It's $60,000 / (50 x 52) = $23.08/hour. That is a 20% lower effective rate than the standard calculation shows.
