Risk-to-Reward Ratio Explained — Why It Matters More Than Win Rate

Last updated: April 20267 min readCalculator Tools

Most traders obsess over finding winning trades. They should obsess over finding good risk-to-reward setups instead. A trader who wins 35% of the time at 3:1 R:R makes more money than a trader who wins 55% at 1:1. The math is clear - and most people ignore it.

Calculate R:R for any trade setup before you enter.

The Math That Changes Everything

Two traders. Same $50,000 account. Same 1% risk ($500 per trade). 100 trades each.

Trader A (High Win Rate)Trader B (High R:R)
Win rate60%35%
R:R ratio1:13:1
Risk per trade$500$500
Reward per trade$500$1,500
Wins (100 trades)60 wins x $500 = $30,00035 wins x $1,500 = $52,500
Losses (100 trades)40 losses x $500 = $20,00065 losses x $500 = $32,500
Net profit+$10,000+$20,000
Return20%40%

Trader B wins only 35% of the time but makes twice as much money. Trader B loses on 65 out of 100 trades - nearly two-thirds are losers - and still doubles the account by 40%. The ratio overwhelms the win rate.

The Breakeven Win Rate Table

This table shows the minimum win rate needed to break even at each R:R ratio:

R:R RatioBreakeven Win RateMeaning
0.5:167%Need to win 2 out of 3 trades
1:150%Need to win half
1.5:140%Need to win 2 out of 5
2:133%Need to win 1 out of 3
3:125%Need to win 1 out of 4
4:120%Need to win 1 out of 5
5:117%Need to win 1 out of 6

At 3:1 R:R, you only need to win 25% of trades to break even. Anything above 25% is profit. Most traders can maintain a 35-45% win rate with basic chart reading. Combined with 3:1 R:R, that is a highly profitable system.

How to Find High R:R Setups

R:R by Trading Style

StyleTypical R:RWhyWin Rate Needed
Scalping1.5:1 to 2:1Tight stops, quick targets40-50%
Day trading2:1 to 3:1Standard for intraday moves25-40%
Swing trading3:1 to 5:1More time for larger moves20-35%
Position trading5:1 to 10:1Weeks/months for big moves15-25%
Options buying3:1+Premium is risk, target is high25-35%

The 1:1 Trap

Trading at 1:1 R:R feels safe because your target equals your stop loss. But it is a mathematical trap:

At 2:1 R:R, a 5-trade losing streak costs $2,500. But the next 3 wins recover $3,000. At 1:1, a 5-trade streak costs $2,500 and the next 3 wins only recover $1,500. Higher R:R makes recovery easier.
