A .tsv file stores tabular data — rows and columns — just like a spreadsheet. The only difference from a CSV is that columns are separated by tab characters instead of commas. That single difference causes most of the confusion: double-clicking a .tsv file on Windows or Mac either opens it in a text editor showing raw tabs, or nothing happens at all.

The fastest fix depends on your device. On Windows, Excel can open it using the import wizard. On Mac, Numbers handles it cleanly. On any device, converting it to CSV first (using our free browser tool) and then opening that CSV eliminates every compatibility problem.

Opening a TSV File in Excel on Windows

Excel does not recognize the .tsv extension by default, so double-clicking it usually opens in Notepad or triggers an "open with" prompt. The correct approach is to import it manually.

  1. Open Excel — do not try to open the file directly from File Explorer.
  2. Go to File > Open > Browse and change the file type dropdown to "All Files" so .tsv files are visible.
  3. Select your .tsv file. Excel opens the Text Import Wizard.
  4. In Step 1, choose Delimited. Click Next.
  5. In Step 2, check Tab (and uncheck any other delimiters like comma). Click Next.
  6. In Step 3, set column formats if needed. Finish.

The data should appear in columns correctly. If some columns are still merged, the file may use a mix of tabs and spaces — in that case, converting to CSV first (below) is more reliable.

To make .tsv files always open this way, right-click a .tsv file in File Explorer, choose "Open with," select Excel, and check "Always use this app." This does not trigger the import wizard automatically — you will still need to use the import approach above — but at least Excel launches when you double-click.

Opening a TSV File in Google Sheets

Google Sheets handles TSV files better than Excel by default. There are two approaches:

Direct import: In Google Sheets, go to File > Import, upload the file, and in the import settings select Tab as the separator type. The data loads correctly in seconds.

Drag and drop to Google Drive: Upload the .tsv file to Google Drive. Google Drive lets you open it with Google Sheets directly. When prompted, select "Google Sheets" and choose "Tab" as the delimiter in the import dialog.

On a phone or tablet, use the Google Sheets app and the same File > Import path. The app supports tab-separated imports on both Android and iOS.

One edge case: if your TSV file has been saved with Windows line endings ( ), Google Sheets usually handles this without issues. If you see blank rows between data rows, the file may have extra newlines — our browser converter strips those automatically.

Opening a TSV File on Mac — Numbers, LibreOffice, or Browser

Mac comes with Numbers, which opens TSV files cleanly without any extra steps. Just double-click the .tsv file — if Numbers is set as the default, it launches and shows an import dialog where you can confirm the tab delimiter.

If the file opens in TextEdit instead (showing raw tab characters), right-click it, choose Open With > Numbers.

For Excel on Mac: the process is the same as Windows — use File > Import, choose "Text File," select the .tsv file, and pick Tab as the delimiter in the wizard that appears.

LibreOffice Calc (free download) also opens TSV files without a wizard. Just drag the file onto the Calc window and it auto-detects the tab delimiter.

If you do not want to open a spreadsheet app at all, see the browser approach below — convert the TSV to CSV first, then open the CSV anywhere.

The Universal Fix: Convert TSV to CSV Before Opening

Converting the TSV to CSV before opening it removes every compatibility problem. CSV files open in a single click in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, and every database import tool without any wizards or delimiter settings.

Use the free TSV to CSV converter: drop your .tsv file or paste the tab-separated content, and download a clean CSV. The tool runs in your browser — no upload, no account, your data never leaves your device.

This is especially useful for large files that take a long time to load in a spreadsheet app, files with special characters that confuse import wizards, or when you need to import into a CRM or database that only accepts CSV.

Related: if you converted to CSV but still see weird formatting in Excel, the problem is usually leading zeros being dropped or dates being auto-formatted. See our guide on converting TSV to CSV step by step for how to preserve those fields.

Opening TSV Files on Android and iPhone

Neither Android nor iOS includes a native app that opens .tsv files by default. The cleanest options:

Google Sheets mobile app: Open Sheets, tap the + to create a new file, choose Import, and upload the .tsv file from your phone storage. Set the separator to Tab. Works well for files under a few thousand rows.

Browser converter: Open the TSV to CSV converter in Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android), paste your data or pick the file, and download the CSV. The CSV then opens in Sheets or Numbers without any import settings.

One thing that trips people up on mobile: email attachments with .tsv files often cannot be opened directly from the Mail or Gmail app. Download the file first (tap and hold > Save to Files on iPhone, or tap Download on Android), then use one of the methods above.

Convert TSV to CSV Instantly — No Software Needed

Drop your .tsv file or paste tab-separated data. Get clean CSV output in seconds. Runs in your browser — nothing uploaded anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What program opens TSV files?

Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, and Numbers all open TSV files. On Windows, use Excel's Text Import Wizard (File > Open > Browse, then select Tab as the delimiter). On Mac, Numbers opens TSV directly. Google Sheets works on any device via the File > Import menu.

Can I open a TSV file without Excel?

Yes. Google Sheets (free, browser-based) opens TSV files directly. LibreOffice Calc is a free desktop alternative. You can also convert the TSV to CSV first using a browser-based tool, then open the CSV in any spreadsheet app.

Why does my TSV file show all data in one column?

When a TSV file opens in one column, it means Excel treated the whole row as a single field. This happens when you open the file directly instead of using the import wizard. Go to File > Open > Browse, select the file, and use the Text Import Wizard to choose Tab as the delimiter.

How do I open a TSV file on a Chromebook?

Use Google Sheets: go to File > Import, upload the .tsv file, and set the separator to Tab. Alternatively, open the free TSV to CSV browser converter in Chrome, convert the file, and download the CSV — then open the CSV directly in Google Sheets without any import settings.
