Running apps, race registrations, and training plans often mix miles and kilometers. A 5K is 3.107 miles. A 10K is 6.214 miles. A marathon is 26.22 miles (42.195 km). The converter above handles the distance conversion — and the pace chart below handles the rest.

Pace conversion requires a different formula than distance. A 9:00/mile pace is not 9:00/km — it is 5:36/km. Here is how to convert both.

Switching Your GPS Watch Between Miles and KM

Most GPS watches (Garmin, Apple Watch, Polar, Suunto) let you toggle between miles and kilometers in the settings. On Garmin watches: Settings → Units → Distance → Kilometers or Miles. On Apple Watch: open the Workout app settings in the Watch app on your iPhone.

Strava lets you set your preferred unit under Settings → Measurement Preference. All historical activities update automatically when you switch.

Converting Speed for Treadmill Settings

Treadmill speeds are often in mph in the US and km/h elsewhere. Common treadmill speeds: 5 mph = 8.0 km/h (easy jogging pace), 6 mph = 9.7 km/h (comfortable running), 8 mph = 12.9 km/h (fast running), 10 mph = 16.1 km/h (sprinting). Use the Speed tab in the unit converter for any mph to km/h conversion.
