US fuel economy is measured in miles per gallon (mpg). Most of the world uses liters per 100 km (L/100km). These inversely related scales do not convert by simple multiplication.
Formula: L/100km = 235.21 / mpg (US). MPG = 235.21 / L/100km.

US Gallon vs UK Gallon
There are two types of gallon:
- US gallon: 3.785 liters — used for fuel in the US
- UK imperial gallon: 4.546 liters — used in some Commonwealth countries
A UK gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon. Fuel prices in the UK quoted per liter look cheaper than US per-gallon prices partly because of this difference — and also because the UK uses the larger gallon when quoting in gallons. The converter uses US gallons by default.
