The Exact Formula

The precise conversion factor is: 1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds.

To convert kg to lbs: multiply the kg value by 2.20462.

To convert lbs to kg: divide the lbs value by 2.20462 (or multiply by 0.45359).

For everyday use, 2.2 is plenty accurate. The rounding error is less than 0.2 percent — for an 80 kg person, the difference between using 2.2 and 2.20462 is 0.37 lbs, which is meaningless in any practical context.

The Mental Math Shortcut

The "double plus 10 percent" trick is the fastest way to convert kg to lbs in your head:

  1. Double the kg value
  2. Take 10 percent of that doubled number
  3. Add the two together

Example: Convert 65 kg to lbs.

Exact answer: 143.3 lbs. The shortcut is off by 0.2 percent.

For lbs to kg, reverse it: halve the lbs value and subtract 10 percent. 180 lbs: 180 / 2 = 90, minus 10% (9) = 81 kg. Exact: 81.6 kg.
