iMovie Alternatives for Windows and Browser — Free Video Editing Tools

Last updated: April 20267 min readVideo Tools

iMovie is free on Mac and iOS but does not exist for Windows, ChromeOS, or Linux. If you need to compress, crop, resize, change speed, merge, add subtitles, or extract audio from video — browser-based tools do all of these on any platform with no install.

Compress Video (iMovie Makes This Harder Than It Should Be)

In iMovie, there is no "compress" button. You export the project and choose a lower quality preset — but you cannot target a specific file size or bitrate. The result is often still too large for email or messaging.

A dedicated compressor lets you upload any video, choose a target (720p, 480p, or specific file size), and download the compressed result. A 200MB iPhone video typically compresses to 20-40MB at 720p.

Crop Video for Instagram, TikTok, or Square

iMovie crops video by applying a "Crop to Fill" effect and repositioning within a fixed 16:9 frame. Getting a 9:16 vertical crop for Instagram Reels or TikTok requires workarounds. Browser crop tools let you pick any aspect ratio directly.

Change Video Speed

iMovie supports per-segment speed changes with a nice visual interface. If you only need to speed up or slow down an entire clip, the browser tool is faster — upload, set speed, download. No project setup required.

Merge Multiple Clips

iMovie's timeline is great for arranging clips with transitions. If you just need to concatenate files — clip A followed by clip B — the browser tool joins them without opening a full editor.

Add Subtitles

iMovie has "Titles" — text overlays with animations and effects. It does not support SRT subtitle files or timed captions. For burning proper subtitles into video (for social media, accessibility, or foreign language content), use a dedicated subtitle tool.

Extract Audio from Video

In iMovie: import video → right-click → detach audio → delete video → share as audio. Four steps. In a browser tool: upload video → click extract → download MP3. One step.

When iMovie Is Still Better

For actual video editing (assembling a project from multiple clips), iMovie remains excellent and free on Apple devices. For individual tasks — compress, crop, convert, extract — browser tools are faster because you skip the project setup entirely.

No Mac? No problem. Compress, crop, convert, and edit video in any browser.
