Changing the order of columns in a CSV or Excel file is one of those tasks that should take 30 seconds but often ends up taking ten minutes. In Excel, reordering columns requires selecting entire columns, cutting, inserting a new column, pasting, and deleting the original — repeated for each column you want to move.

A free browser column editor lets you see all your columns in a list, click arrows to move them up or down, and download the rearranged file. No formulas, no cutting and pasting, no opening Excel at all.

Why Reordering Columns in Excel Is Annoying

Excel does support column drag-and-drop, but it requires holding Shift while dragging — a non-obvious keyboard combination that many users do not know. Without Shift, dragging a column will overwrite the destination column rather than inserting before it, which can cause data loss.

The standard approach is:

  1. Select the entire column you want to move
  2. Right-click > Cut
  3. Select the column where you want to insert
  4. Right-click > Insert Cut Cells
  5. Repeat for each column

For three or four column moves this works. For a CSV export with 25 columns that need to match a specific import schema, it becomes a significant chore.

How to Reorder Columns With a Browser Tool

  1. Open the free column editor in any browser.
  2. Upload your file (CSV, XLSX, XLS, TSV, or ODS).
  3. You will see a list of all column headers.
  4. Use the up and down arrows next to each column name to reposition it.
  5. When the order looks right, click Download.

The output file contains all your data in the new column order. Your original file is not changed.

Common Use Cases for Reordering Columns

Can I Reorder and Delete Columns at the Same Time?

Yes. The tool handles both operations together. Uncheck any columns you want to remove, and use the up/down arrows to arrange the remaining columns in the correct order. When you download, the output will reflect both sets of changes simultaneously.

This is useful when you are working with an export that has extra columns you do not need AND columns that are in the wrong order — you can clean both issues in one pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drag columns to reorder them, or only use arrows?

The tool uses up/down arrows to move columns one position at a time. For large moves across many positions, use the arrows repeatedly to get to the target position.

Does reordering columns affect the data inside the columns?

No. Only the column order changes. Each column's data stays attached to its header — nothing is shuffled or misaligned.

Can I reorder columns in an Excel file with multiple sheets?

Yes. After uploading a multi-sheet Excel file, the tool lets you select which sheet to work with. The column operations apply to the selected sheet.

Does this work for large CSV files?

The tool runs in your browser and handles most typical file sizes well. Very large files (hundreds of MB) may be slower to process depending on your device.
