How to Create a Barcode for Your Products — Step by Step Guide

Last updated: April 20267 min readGenerator Tools

Creating a barcode for your product has two steps that most guides confuse: getting the number and generating the image. The number is the identity. The barcode is just a visual encoding of that number. Here is exactly how to do both.

Step 1: Decide — Official UPC or Internal Tracking?

Selling Where?Need Official UPC?Registration Required?Cost
Amazon, Walmart, Target, grocery storesYes — UPC-AGS1 registration$250 initial + $50/year (10 numbers)
Shopify POS (in-store scanning)Recommended — UPC-AGS1 registration$250 initial + $50/year
Shopify online onlyOptional (needed for Google Shopping)GS1 if you want it$0-250
EtsyNot requiredNone$0
Your own retail store onlyYour choiceGS1 or internal system$0-250
Warehouse / inventory trackingNo — use Code 128None$0
Library / asset managementNo — use Code 39 or CodabarNone$0
Farmers market / craft fairNot neededNone$0

Step 2: Get Your Number (If Retail)

If you need an official UPC number:

  1. Go to gs1.org and register as a company
  2. Choose your capacity: 10 numbers ($250), 100 ($750), or 1,000 ($2,500)
  3. GS1 assigns your company prefix — a unique set of starting digits
  4. You assign the remaining digits to each product variation
  5. The check digit (last digit) is calculated automatically

For internal tracking, skip this entirely. Create your own numbering system — "WH-001", "PROD-2026-A", whatever makes sense for your operation.

Step 3: Generate the Barcode Image

  1. Open Barcode Generator
  2. Select your format:
    • UPC-A for US retail (12 digits)
    • EAN-13 for international retail (13 digits)
    • Code 128 for shipping, logistics, internal tracking
    • Code 39 for warehouse, government, military
  3. Enter your number
  4. Download the barcode as PNG

Step 4: Add to Your Product Label

The barcode is now a PNG image. Add it to your label using any design tool:

Need to adjust the barcode size first? Use our Image Resizer. Need to compress the image for web use? We have that too.
