Every word processor has a word counter buried in a menu somewhere. If you just need a quick count from any source — plain text, an email, a copied paragraph — a browser tool gives you the number in seconds without opening any software.
Method 1: Browser Word Counter (Any Text)
Works for text from any source — email, chat, clipboard, handwritten notes you typed up, anything.
- Open Word Counter
- Paste your text (Ctrl+V / Cmd+V)
- Read the counts: words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, reading time
No account. No software. Works on desktop, tablet, and phone. This is the fastest option when your text is not already in a word processor.
Method 2: Google Docs
- Open your document in Google Docs
- Go to Tools > Word count (or press Ctrl+Shift+C / Cmd+Shift+C)
- See: pages, words, characters, characters excluding spaces
- Check "Display word count while typing" for a live counter at the bottom of the screen
Limitation: Google Docs counts words and characters but does not show sentences, paragraphs, or reading time. For those, copy your text into a dedicated counter.
Method 3: Microsoft Word
- Look at the bottom-left status bar — word count shows by default
- For details: Review > Word Count
- See: pages, words, characters (with/without spaces), paragraphs, lines
- To count a selection: highlight the text first, then check the status bar
Tip: If word count is not in your status bar, right-click the status bar and check "Word Count."
Method 4: Apple Pages
- Go to View > Show Word Count
- Word count appears at the bottom of the document
- Click the counter to cycle through: words, characters, paragraphs, pages
Method 5: On Mobile (iPhone / Android)

|---|
| Any phone browser | Open Word Counter, paste text — works identically to desktop |
| Google Docs (mobile) | Three-dot menu (top-right) > Word count |
| Microsoft Word (mobile) | Review tab > Word Count |
| Apple Pages (iOS) | Three-dot menu > Word Count |
| Notes app | No built-in count — copy text to a browser word counter |
