To find X% of a number, multiply the number by X and divide by 100. Example: 15% of 200 = 200 x 15 / 100 = 30. To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100.
Percentages come up everywhere — tips, discounts, taxes, grades, loan interest, body fat, investment returns, salary raises. Rather than memorizing individual answers, you just need three formulas. They cover every percentage question you will ever face.
Every percentage problem falls into one of these three categories:
| Question | Formula | Example | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is X% of Y? | Y x X / 100 | What is 15% of 200? | 200 x 15 / 100 = 30 |
| X is what % of Y? | (X / Y) x 100 | 42 is what % of 50? | (42 / 50) x 100 = 84% |
| % change from X to Y? | ((Y - X) / X) x 100 | Change from 80 to 100? | ((100 - 80) / 80) x 100 = 25% |
That is it. Three formulas. If you know which question you are asking, you know which formula to use. Our Percentage Calculator handles all three — type your numbers and get the answer instantly.

You do not need a calculator for most everyday percentage questions. These shortcuts work in your head:
Percentages, fractions, and decimals are three ways to express the same thing. Knowing how to convert between them makes math faster:
| Fraction | Decimal | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 | 0.50 | 50% |
| 1/3 | 0.3333 | 33.33% |
| 1/4 | 0.25 | 25% |
| 1/5 | 0.20 | 20% |
| 1/8 | 0.125 | 12.5% |
| 1/10 | 0.10 | 10% |
| 2/3 | 0.6667 | 66.67% |
| 3/4 | 0.75 | 75% |
| 3/8 | 0.375 | 37.5% |
| 4/5 | 0.80 | 80% |
Fraction to percentage: divide the top number by the bottom number, then multiply by 100. Example: 7/8 = 7 divided by 8 = 0.875, times 100 = 87.5%.
Decimal to percentage: multiply by 100 (or move the decimal two places right). Example: 0.42 = 42%.
Percentage to decimal: divide by 100 (or move the decimal two places left). Example: 65% = 0.65.
Here is where each formula shows up in daily life:
Most people tip between 15% and 20%. On a $68 bill: 10% is $6.80, so 15% is $6.80 + $3.40 = $10.20. For 20%, double the 10%: $6.80 x 2 = $13.60. Our Tip Calculator handles split bills and custom percentages.
A $120 jacket marked 30% off: 30% of $120 = $36 off, so you pay $84. Two successive discounts are not additive — 20% off then 10% off is not 30% off. It is 20% off $120 = $96, then 10% off $96 = $86.40. Use our Discount Calculator for stacked deals.
Sales tax of 8.25% on a $50 purchase: $50 x 0.0825 = $4.13, total $54.13. For income tax brackets, you only pay the higher rate on income above the threshold — not your entire income.
Got 38 out of 45 on a test: (38 / 45) x 100 = 84.4%, typically a B. Our GPA Calculator converts percentages to grade points across your full course load.
A $10,000 loan at 6% annual interest: first year interest = $10,000 x 0.06 = $600. But loans compound, so the actual cost is higher. Use our Loan Calculator or Compound Interest Calculator for accurate totals.
Body mass index, body fat percentage, macronutrient ratios — all percentages. If a diet calls for 30% protein and you eat 2,000 calories: 30% of 2,000 = 600 calories from protein, divided by 4 calories per gram = 150g protein daily. Our BMI Calculator handles that formula for you.
A 4% raise on a $55,000 salary: $55,000 x 0.04 = $2,200 raise, new salary $57,200. To calculate what raise percentage you got: ($57,200 - $55,000) / $55,000 x 100 = 4%. Our Salary Calculator breaks this down by paycheck, including taxes.
