Grade Percentage Calculator — Convert Test Scores to Percentages & Letter Grades

Last updated: April 20267 min readCalculator Tools

To calculate your grade percentage: divide points earned by total points possible, then multiply by 100. Got 42 out of 50? That is (42 / 50) x 100 = 84%, which is typically a B.

Whether you are checking a test score, figuring out your weighted grade across categories, or doing the panicked "what do I need on the final to pass" calculation at 2 AM — this guide covers all of it with real numbers and real formulas.

The Grade Percentage Formula

Grade % = (Points Earned / Total Points) x 100

This works for any single assignment, test, or quiz. Our Percentage Calculator handles this instantly — use the "X is what % of Y" mode, enter your score and total, and get the percentage with the letter grade equivalent.

Standard Grading Scale

Letter GradePercentage RangeGPA (4.0 Scale)Description
A+97 - 100%4.0Exceptional
A93 - 96%4.0Excellent
A-90 - 92%3.7Very Good
B+87 - 89%3.3Good
B83 - 86%3.0Above Average
B-80 - 82%2.7Slightly Above Average
C+77 - 79%2.3Average
C73 - 76%2.0Satisfactory
C-70 - 72%1.7Below Average
D+67 - 69%1.3Poor
D63 - 66%1.0Below Standards
D-60 - 62%0.7Barely Passing
FBelow 60%0.0Failing

Note: This is the most common US grading scale, but schools vary. Some use a 10-point scale (A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%), some do not use plus/minus grades, and some set different cutoffs for AP or honors courses. Always check your syllabus.

Standard vs Weighted Grading

Simple (Unweighted) Grading

In unweighted grading, every point counts equally. Add up all points earned and divide by all points possible:

Weighted Grading

In weighted grading, categories have different importance. A common breakdown:

CategoryWeightYour ScoreWeighted Contribution
Homework20%92%92 x 0.20 = 18.4
Quizzes15%88%88 x 0.15 = 13.2
Midterm25%81%81 x 0.25 = 20.25
Projects10%95%95 x 0.10 = 9.5
Final Exam30%78%78 x 0.30 = 23.4
Weighted Total:84.75% = B

Notice how the final exam (78%) pulled the overall grade down more than the projects (95%) pulled it up — because the final is weighted at 30% while projects are only 10%.

What Grade Do I Need on the Final?

This is the question every student asks at the end of the semester. Here is the formula:

Needed Final Grade = (Target Grade - Current Grade x (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight

Worked Example

You have an 82% in the class. The final exam is worth 25% of your grade. You want an 85% (B) overall.

You need a 94% on the final to bring your overall grade to 85%.

"What Do I Need?" Quick Reference

If the needed score is over 100%, you mathematically cannot reach your target grade with the final alone. Time to talk to your professor about extra credit.

GPA and Percentage

GPA (Grade Point Average) converts letter grades to a numerical scale for averaging across courses. The standard 4.0 scale assigns points to each letter grade, then averages them weighted by credit hours.

Our GPA Calculator handles this calculation across multiple courses with different credit hours. Enter each course grade and credits, and it computes your cumulative GPA.

Quick GPA Example

CourseCreditsGradeGrade PointsQuality Points
Biology4B+ (3.3)3.34 x 3.3 = 13.2
English3A- (3.7)3.73 x 3.7 = 11.1
Math3B (3.0)3.03 x 3.0 = 9.0
History3A (4.0)4.03 x 4.0 = 12.0
Art2B+ (3.3)3.32 x 3.3 = 6.6
15 total51.9 total

GPA = 51.9 / 15 = 3.46
