Discount Calculator With GST for India (Tax + Discount Order)
Table of Contents
GST in India is calculated on the price after discount, not before. This means the discount reduces both the base price AND the GST you pay on it. This guide explains the order, the slab rates, and how to use free discount calculator for Indian retail prices.
The GST + Discount Formula
The standard formula for India:
Final Price = (MRP × (1 - Discount %)) × (1 + GST %)
Where MRP is the Maximum Retail Price (the printed price on the package). The discount comes off the MRP first, then GST is added to the discounted price.
Example: ₹10,000 MRP item, 20% off, 18% GST.
- Discounted price: ₹10,000 × 0.80 = ₹8,000
- GST (18% of ₹8,000): ₹1,440
- Final price: ₹8,000 + ₹1,440 = ₹9,440
If the GST were calculated on the MRP first instead, you would pay ₹8,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹9,800 — ₹360 more. The "discount first" rule is good for Indian shoppers.
Indian GST Slab Rates
| GST Slab | Examples of Goods |
|---|---|
| 0% (Nil) | Fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, books |
| 5% | Household essentials, packaged food, footwear under ₹1,000 |
| 12% | Mobile phones, processed food, business class air travel |
| 18% | Most goods and services — electronics, clothing over ₹1,000, restaurants |
| 28% | Luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco products, aerated drinks |
Most consumer products fall into the 12% or 18% slabs. Always check the GST rate on the product or invoice — different categories within the same store can have different rates.

India splits GST into two components for intra-state sales:
- CGST (Central GST): Half of the total GST, goes to the central government
- SGST (State GST): Other half, goes to the state government
For inter-state sales (buying from another state), the full GST is charged as IGST (Integrated GST). The total tax rate is the same — only the split changes.
From the customer's perspective, this distinction does not affect the discount calculation. The total GST percentage is what matters for the final price math.

Open Discount CalculatorFrequently Asked Questions
Is GST always calculated after the discount?
Yes, in standard retail transactions. GST is charged on the "transaction value" — the actual price paid after any discounts. This is the standard practice across India and is enforced by GST law.
What about the "all-inclusive" price on online shopping sites?
Most Indian e-commerce sites display the final price already including GST, so the discount math is built into the displayed number. If you see "₹4,999 all inclusive," that price already has GST factored in.
Can the discount calculator handle Indian rupee symbols and numbers?
Yes — the calculator is currency-agnostic. Enter the number values without symbols and the math works the same regardless of currency. The result will use whatever currency you input.
