$500$450.00$400.00$375.00$350.00$300.00$250.00

The Three Discount Formulas You Need

  1. Find the sale price: Sale Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount%/100). Example: 35% off $80 → $80 × 0.65 = $52
  2. Find how much you save: Savings = Original Price × (Discount%/100). Example: 35% off $80 → $80 × 0.35 = $28 saved
  3. Find the discount percentage: Discount% = ((Original - Sale) / Original) × 100. Example: Was $80, now $52 → (28/80) × 100 = 35% off

Stacked Discounts — Why 20% + 10% Is Not 30%

Retailers often stack discounts: "Take an extra 10% off already reduced items." This is not the same as the combined percentage:

ScenarioCalculationFinal PriceEffective Discount
30% off $100 (single discount)$100 × 0.70$70.0030.0%
20% off then 10% off $100$100 × 0.80 × 0.90$72.0028.0%
10% off then 20% off $100$100 × 0.90 × 0.80$72.0028.0%
15% off then 15% off $100$100 × 0.85 × 0.85$72.2527.75%
25% off then 25% off $100$100 × 0.75 × 0.75$56.2543.75%

The order of stacked discounts does not matter mathematically (multiplication is commutative). But the combined discount is always less than the sum of individual percentages.

Honest Limitations

This calculator computes pre-tax discounts. Sales tax varies by state and municipality, so the final checkout price will be higher. The calculator also does not handle complex pricing schemes like tiered pricing, subscription discounts, or loyalty point conversions. For those, you need the specific retailer pricing structure.
