Free DaVinci Resolve Smart Reframe Alternative — No Studio License
- DaVinci Resolve free does NOT include Smart Reframe — that is Studio only ($299)
- The free version can reframe manually but not with AI subject tracking
- Browser tool handles reframing without install, license, or AI
Table of Contents
DaVinci Resolve is free and powerful, but the Smart Reframe feature — the AI subject-tracking auto-reframe — is exclusive to DaVinci Resolve Studio, the $299 paid version. If you only need to reframe landscape to 9:16 for social media, the free version works but requires manual keyframing. A browser tool skips the whole install and runs reframe in ten seconds.
What Smart Reframe actually does
DaVinci Studio's Smart Reframe analyzes each frame, detects subjects, and generates a moving crop that tracks them through the shot. For a video where a speaker walks across the frame, it produces a vertical output that keeps them centered automatically.
It is genuinely impressive — better than CapCut's auto-reframe in most tests. The catch: $299 one-time for Studio.

Manual reframe in free DaVinci Resolve (if you still want to install)
- Create a new project with output resolution 1080x1920.
- Import your landscape clip. Drop it on the timeline.
- In Inspector, scale the clip to fit vertically (keeps original aspect).
- Duplicate the clip to a track below. Scale up to fill the canvas. Apply a blur effect (Blur > Box Blur, set to ~40px).
- Keyframe if subjects move across the frame.
- Render and export.
Total time: 3-10 minutes depending on how many keyframes you need.
Browser alternative — 30 seconds total
The browser reframe tool handles the whole manual-DaVinci workflow as a single click. Upload, pick 9:16, pick blurred background, render. The blurred background effect is baked in — no manual Box Blur configuration.
Tradeoff: no subject tracking. The landscape clip stays centered at its original size; the blurred copy fills the sides. For most cases, that is what you want.
When DaVinci is still the right tool
If you already have Studio for other features (color grading, Fusion effects, Fairlight audio mixing, HDR workflows), using Smart Reframe is free marginal use. Fire it up, do the reframe, done.
If you are a regular editor without Studio, the free version is excellent overall but requires manual work for reframe. For quick social exports, a browser tool is faster. For production cuts going through the full DaVinci pipeline anyway, stay in DaVinci.
Reframe Without Installing DaVinci Studio
Browser tool does the core reframe in 30 seconds. No install, no license, no manual keyframes.
Open Free Video ReframerFrequently Asked Questions
Is DaVinci Resolve Studio a subscription?
No — $299 one-time license, unlike Adobe's $22.99/month subscription model. For heavy users it is the best value in the professional editing space.
Does the free version of DaVinci watermark exports?
No. DaVinci Resolve free is genuinely free with no watermark and no watermarks on export. Few features are gated to Studio but none of the core editing features.
Can I run DaVinci Resolve on an older computer?
DaVinci is heavy. Minimum 16GB RAM, a dedicated GPU, and a recent CPU. On older hardware, browser-based tools outperform DaVinci for simple tasks like reframing.
Which is better for TikTok content — Smart Reframe or browser reframe?
Smart Reframe wins for single-subject moving content. Browser reframe (with blurred background) wins for multi-subject, wide shots, B-roll, and anything without a clear "subject" to track.
