How to Crop for TikTok (9:16)
- Open Crop Video in any browser
- Drop your video — MP4, MOV, AVI, or WebM
- Select 9:16 aspect ratio from the presets
- Position the crop frame — drag to choose which part of the video to keep
- Export — download the cropped 9:16 video ready for TikTok upload
Landscape to Vertical — Two Approaches
When converting a 16:9 landscape video to 9:16 vertical, you have two options:
- Crop (this tool): Select a vertical slice of the frame. You lose the left and right edges but get a clean full-screen vertical video. Best when the important action is centered
- Social Reframe: Keeps the entire original video in the center and fills the top/bottom with a blurred copy, gradient, or solid color. Best when you want to keep the full frame visible
For talking-head videos and centered action, crop works great. For wide shots, group scenes, or text on the edges, Social Reframe preserves more content.
Platform-Specific Tips
- TikTok: 9:16 is mandatory for best reach. Non-vertical videos get smaller display and lower engagement. Always crop or reframe before uploading
- Instagram Reels: Same 9:16 as TikTok. If repurposing TikTok content, remove the TikTok watermark region by cropping slightly
- Instagram Feed: 4:5 gets 20% more screen space than 1:1 in the feed. Worth the crop if your content allows it
- YouTube: 16:9 is standard. If uploading vertical content as a Short, keep 9:16. For regular videos, always use 16:9
Complete Social Media Video Workflow
- Trim to the right length (TikTok: 15-60s, Reels: up to 90s)
- Crop to the right aspect ratio (9:16, 1:1, etc.)
- Add subtitles — 85% of social video is watched muted
- Compress if the file is too large for the platform's upload limit
