Covered calls are the most popular options income strategy. You already own the stock. You sell someone the right to buy it at a higher price. You collect premium income immediately. If the stock stays flat or rises modestly, you win. The calculator shows exactly how much income you can generate and what happens in every scenario.
Calculate your covered call premium, profit, and breakeven.
Open Options Calculator| Outcome | Stock Price at Expiry | What Happens | Your P&L |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock stays below strike | $95-$109 | Option expires worthless. Keep shares + keep $250 premium | +$250 income (can sell another call next month) |
| Stock hits strike exactly | $110 | Shares may or may not get called. Keep premium either way | +$250 premium + $1,000 stock gain = +$1,250 |
| Stock surges past strike | $125 | Shares get called away at $110. You miss $110-$125 upside | +$250 premium + $1,000 gain = +$1,250 (missed $1,500 extra) |
| Stock Price | Shares | Strike (5% OTM) | Monthly Premium (~2%) | Annual Income (12 months) | Yield |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50 | 100 | $52.50 | $100 | $1,200 | 24% |
| $100 | 100 | $105 | $200 | $2,400 | 24% |
| $150 | 100 | $157.50 | $300 | $3,600 | 24% |
| $200 | 100 | $210 | $400 | $4,800 | 24% |
| $500 | 100 | $525 | $1,000 | $12,000 | 24% |
These are estimates. Actual premiums depend on implied volatility, time to expiration, and how far out-of-the-money the strike is. Higher volatility = higher premiums. Farther OTM strikes = lower premiums but less chance of being called away.
| Strike Distance | Premium | Chance of Being Called | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| At-the-money (ATM) | Highest | ~50% | Maximum income, willing to sell shares |
| 2-3% out-of-the-money | High | ~30-40% | Good balance of income and upside |
| 5% out-of-the-money | Moderate | ~15-25% | Want to keep shares, decent income |
| 10% out-of-the-money | Low | ~5-10% | Almost certain to keep shares, small income |
| 15%+ out-of-the-money | Very low | ~1-3% | Token income, basically just holding stock |
