Covered calls are the most popular options income strategy. You already own the stock. You sell someone the right to buy it at a higher price. You collect premium income immediately. If the stock stays flat or rises modestly, you win. The calculator shows exactly how much income you can generate and what happens in every scenario.

How Covered Calls Work

  1. Own 100 shares of a stock (e.g., bought at $100/share = $10,000 position)
  2. Sell 1 call option with a strike above current price (e.g., $110 strike, 30 days out)
  3. Collect premium immediately (e.g., $2.50/share = $250)
  4. Wait until expiration

The Three Outcomes

OutcomeStock Price at ExpiryWhat HappensYour P&L
Stock stays below strike$95-$109Option expires worthless. Keep shares + keep $250 premium+$250 income (can sell another call next month)
Stock hits strike exactly$110Shares may or may not get called. Keep premium either way+$250 premium + $1,000 stock gain = +$1,250
Stock surges past strike$125Shares get called away at $110. You miss $110-$125 upside+$250 premium + $1,000 gain = +$1,250 (missed $1,500 extra)

These are estimates. Actual premiums depend on implied volatility, time to expiration, and how far out-of-the-money the strike is. Higher volatility = higher premiums. Farther OTM strikes = lower premiums but less chance of being called away.
