Last updated: April 20266 min readPDF Tools

Need to edit a PDF in Word? Extract the text for free — no Adobe subscription, no SmallPDF limits. Here's the complete workflow for native and scanned PDFs.

Free PDF to Editable Text (2 Methods)

Method 1: Native PDFs (Has Real Text)

  1. Open the PDF to text extractor
  2. Upload your PDF — text is extracted from all pages
  3. Copy the text and paste into Microsoft Word or Google Docs
  4. Format as needed — add headings, adjust fonts, organize paragraphs

Method 2: Scanned PDFs (Images of Pages)

  1. Open the PDF OCR tool
  2. Upload the scanned PDF — OCR reads the images
  3. Copy the extracted text into Word or Google Docs
  4. Review for OCR errors — check numbers, names, and special characters

Extract text from any PDF. Paste into Word. Free, no limits.

Free vs. Paid PDF to Word Converters

ToolFree LimitLayout PreservationUpload RequiredCost
PDF to text (ours)✓ Unlimited~Text only (good for editing)✓ No upload✓ Free
SmallPDF✗ 2/day✓ Good layout✗ Yes, uploaded~Free (limited)
iLovePDF✗ Limited✓ Good layout✗ Yes, uploaded~Free (limited)
Adobe Acrobat✓ Unlimited✓ Best layout~Cloud optional$19.99/month
Google Docs✓ Unlimited~Basic✗ Uploaded to Google✓ Free
Zamzar✗ 2/day~Decent✗ Yes, uploaded~Free (limited)

The trade-off: Free text extraction gives you editable text without the exact layout. Paid tools preserve formatting better. For most editing tasks (changing text, extracting data, repurposing content), text extraction is sufficient.

The Google Docs Trick

Google Docs can open PDFs and attempt to convert them:

  1. Upload your PDF to Google Drive
  2. Right-click → Open with → Google Docs
  3. Google converts the PDF to an editable document
  4. File → Download → Microsoft Word (.docx)

This works well for simple PDFs. Complex layouts (multi-column, tables) often break. For those, extract text first and rebuild the layout in Word.

PDF to Excel (Extracting Tables)

If your PDF contains tables and you need the data in a spreadsheet:

  1. Use the PDF to text tool to extract all text
  2. If the table structure is preserved, paste into Excel and use Text to Columns
  3. For scanned tables, use the table extractor which preserves row/column structure
  4. For CSV output, use JSON to CSV after extraction
