Mac has Apple Music (limited formats). Windows has nothing built in. Both can convert audio instantly through the browser — no app installation, no terminal commands. Here is exactly how to convert audio on every platform.

Mac: Convert Audio Files

Option 1: Apple Music (Built-in — Limited Formats)

  1. Open Music (or iTunes on older macOS)
  2. Go to Music → Preferences → Files → Import Settings
  3. Choose your encoder: AAC, MP3, WAV, or AIFF
  4. Select the song in your library
  5. File → Convert → Create [format] Version

Limitation: No FLAC or OGG support. The song must be in your Music library — you cannot convert an arbitrary file from Finder. For FLAC, OGG, or files not in your library, use Option 2.

Option 2: Browser Converter (Any Format, No Install)

  1. Open the audio converter in Safari or Chrome
  2. Drop your audio file from Finder
  3. Select the output format (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC)
  4. Download the converted file

Handles every format including FLAC and OGG that Apple ignores. No Homebrew or terminal needed.

Windows: Convert Audio Files

Windows has no built-in audio converter. Not in Windows 10, not in Windows 11. Your options:

Option 1: Browser Converter (Fastest — No Install)

  1. Open the audio converter in Chrome or Edge
  2. Drop your file
  3. Select format and download

This is the fastest path if you just need to convert one file. No installation, no configuration.

Option 2: VLC (If Already Installed)

  1. Open VLC → Media → Convert / Save
  2. Click Add and select your audio file
  3. Click Convert / Save
  4. Choose a profile (Audio - MP3, Audio - FLAC, etc.)
  5. Set destination file and click Start

The interface is not intuitive, but it works. VLC is probably already on your computer.

Option 3: Audacity (For Editing + Converting)

Install Audacity (free, open source). Open your file, then File → Export As → choose format. Use this when you also need to trim, normalize, or remove noise — Audacity is a full editor, not just a converter.
