Compress JPG — Reduce Photo File Size Free, No Upload

Last updated: April 20266 min readImage Tools

Your phone takes 12-megapixel photos that are 5-10MB each. That is great for printing large posters. It is overkill for emailing, posting online, or uploading to a form. Here is how to make JPGs smaller in seconds.

Compress a JPG (3 Steps)

  1. Open the Image Compressor.
  2. Drop your JPG in. Adjust quality (70-80% for most uses).
  3. Download the compressed JPG.

How JPG Compression Works

JPG compression works by analyzing 8x8 pixel blocks and removing visual information that the human eye is least sensitive to. High-frequency details (sharp edges, fine textures) are simplified first. Smooth gradients and large color areas are preserved well.

This is why photos of nature (sky, water, grass) compress extremely well — they are mostly smooth gradients. Photos with lots of text, sharp lines, or fine details compress less efficiently because those high-frequency details are the first to go.

Before and After: Real Numbers

Original SizeQuality 80%Quality 60%Quality 40%

3MB (DSLR export)~500KB (83% smaller)~250KB (92% smaller)~150KB (95% smaller)
1MB (web image)~200KB (80% smaller)~100KB (90% smaller)~60KB (94% smaller)

These are typical numbers. Actual results vary by image content. Photos with large areas of similar color compress more efficiently than photos with lots of detail and variation.
