The TikTok/Reels Creation Workflow — With vs Without CapCut
Most TikTok and Reels content follows the same editing pattern: vertical format + subtitles + maybe a speed change + maybe a trim. CapCut bundles all of this into one app. But each step can be done independently in a browser — often faster for simple content.
| Step | CapCut Approach | Browser Approach |
|---|
| 1. Go vertical (9:16) | Import → aspect ratio tool → reframe | Crop Video (9:16 preset) or Social Reframe |
| 2. Trim to length | Timeline → split → delete sections | Trim Video — set start/end, download |
| 3. Add subtitles | Auto-captions → style text → export | Add Subtitles — auto-caption or SRT upload |
| 4. Speed change | Speed tool on timeline | Video Speed — 0.25x to 4x |
| 5. Compress for upload | Export settings (limited control) | Compress Video — target specific file size |
Step-by-Step: TikTok Content Without CapCut
Step 1 — Make It Vertical
TikTok requires 9:16 (1080x1920) for full-screen display. Two approaches:
- Crop Video — select 9:16 preset, position the frame on the important part of your video. Best for talking-head content or centered action where the sides are not important
- Social Reframe — keeps your entire horizontal video in the center and fills top/bottom with a blurred copy, gradient, or solid color. Best for wide shots, group scenes, or content where you need the full frame visible
Step 2 — Trim to Length
TikTok videos perform best at 15-60 seconds. Reels allow up to 90 seconds.
- Open Trim Video
- Set start and end time to capture the best section
- Download the trimmed clip
Step 3 — Add Subtitles
85% of TikTok and Instagram content is watched without sound. Subtitles are not optional — they are the difference between engagement and scroll-past.
- Open Add Subtitles
- Use auto-caption generation (speech-to-text) or upload an SRT file
- Customize: white text, black background, bottom-center position is the standard
- Download with subtitles burned in
Step 4 — Optional Speed Adjustment
Speed changes are a staple of TikTok content:
- 2x for time-lapses — cooking, setup, transformation content
- 0.5x for dramatic moments — sports highlights, dance moves, reactions
- Open Video Speed, select speed, download
Step 5 — Compress for Upload
TikTok allows up to 287MB for videos. Instagram Reels allows up to 250MB. If your file is over these limits:
- Open Compress Video
- Compress to target size — the tool shows before/after file sizes
- For social media, medium compression at 720p looks great on phone screens
What CapCut Does Better (Be Honest)
- AI background removal — browser tools cannot match this yet
- Auto-beat sync — automatically cuts to music beats. Unique to CapCut
- Trending templates — one-tap content styles that match viral formats
- Animated text — word-by-word highlighting, kinetic typography
- Transitions — smooth transitions between clips (browser tools join end-to-end)
- Multi-layer editing — overlay multiple video/text/sticker layers
If your content relies on these features, CapCut is the right tool. If your content is talking-head, tutorial, vlog, or simple clip content — browser tools get you there faster.
