Canva Barcode & QR Code Alternative — Free Generator (No Design Skills)

Canva can make QR codes. Canva cannot make barcodes. If you are designing product labels, packaging, or inventory tags in Canva and need a barcode, here is the workflow — and a free QR code alternative that does not require Canva Pro.

The Two-Tool Workflow: Barcode + Canva
- Generate your barcode: Open Barcode Generator, select UPC-A (or your format), enter your number, download PNG
- Open Canva: Start with a label template or custom dimensions for your packaging
- Upload the barcode: Uploads → Upload files → select your barcode PNG
- Position and resize: Drag the barcode onto your label, resize to fit. Keep the white space (quiet zones) around it
- Download your label: Export as PDF for printing or PNG for digital use
Total time: about 2 minutes. Total cost: $0.
Skip Canva Pro for QR Codes Too
Canva's QR code generator works, but customization options are limited on the free plan. Our QR Code Generator is completely free with full customization — colors, sizes, error correction. Generate the QR PNG, upload to Canva Free, done.
The same workflow: generate outside Canva, upload the PNG, add to your design. Works for both barcodes and QR codes without paying for Canva Pro.
Label Design Workflow — Complete Tool Chain
Real Scenarios
- Candle maker designing labels: Create your label in Canva with your brand, scent name, and ingredients. Generate a UPC barcode separately and upload it to the design. Print on Avery labels.
- Coffee roaster packaging: Design the bag label in Canva with origin story and roast profile. Add the UPC barcode for retail shelf scanning. Add a QR code linking to your farm story or brewing instructions.
- Small batch skincare: Canva label with brand identity and ingredient list. UPC barcode for boutique retail distribution. QR code linking to usage instructions and safety data.
- Event badges: Design the badge in Canva. Add a Code 128 barcode for check-in scanning. No UPC needed — internal tracking only.
Why Two Tools Beat One
Even if Canva added barcode generation, you would still want a dedicated tool because:
- Format support: A dedicated generator offers 8+ barcode formats. Canva would likely offer 1-2.
- Check digit calculation: Dedicated tools handle the math automatically.
- Scan verification: You can test the barcode in our scanner before adding it to your design.
- No subscription lock-in: Your barcode generation does not depend on maintaining a Canva Pro subscription.
