Canva's Video Editor — What the Free Tier Actually Gives You
Canva added video editing to compete with VEED, Clipchamp, and Kapwing. The free tier is limited:
| Feature | Canva Free | Canva Pro ($13/mo) | Browser Tools |
|---|
| Video length | 5 min max | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Background remover | Pro only | Yes | Not available |
| Premium templates | Watermarked | Full access | N/A (no templates) |
| Export quality | 1080p | 4K | Original quality |
| Upload to server | Yes | Yes | No — local processing |
| Account required | Yes | Yes | No |
| GIF export | Yes (from designs) | Yes | Yes (from any video) |
Canva is a design tool that added video features. It is good for templated social content (Instagram posts with video backgrounds, animated quote cards). For actual video editing — trimming, subtitles, compression, format conversion — it is not the right tool.
Video Tasks Canva Cannot Do Well
- Compress video for email — Canva has no compression controls. You cannot target a file size. → Video Compressor
- Convert video format — Canva exports MP4 only from its editor. Cannot convert MKV, AVI, or WebM. → Video Converter
- Extract audio — Canva cannot separate audio from video. → Video to MP3
- Burn in SRT subtitles — Canva has basic text overlays but no SRT import for timed captions. → Add Subtitles
- Change video speed — Canva has limited speed controls (0.5×-2× only, no 0.25× slow-mo). → Speed Changer (0.25×-4×)
- Make GIF from any video — Canva makes GIFs from Canva designs, not from uploaded videos. → Video to GIF
- Crop to custom dimensions — Canva uses preset sizes. Custom pixel dimensions are clunky. → Video Cropper
- Remove audio track — Canva cannot mute the audio track from a video. → Remove Audio
- Loop video — no loop feature. → Loop Video
- Extract frames — cannot pull still images from video. → Frame Extractor
When Canva IS the Right Choice for Video
Canva wins for templated social content:
- Animated Instagram posts — add motion to a static design (text animations, transitions between slides)
- Video presentations — Canva's presentation mode with video backgrounds is smoother than PowerPoint
- Social ads with video — drag-and-drop templates with stock video clips, text overlays, brand kit
- YouTube thumbnails — technically images, but Canva excels at this (use Frame Extractor to pull the right still from your video, then design in Canva)
If your "video editing" is actually "animated graphic design," Canva is great. If you need to process, convert, trim, compress, or subtitle actual video files, use purpose-built video tools.
The Complete Video Workflow Without Canva
Creating social video content from scratch:
- Trim to the key section (15-60 sec for social)
- Add subtitles — auto-generate or import SRT, burn in
- Crop to 9:16 for TikTok/Reels or 4:5 for Instagram feed
- Resize to 1080×1920 (vertical) or 1080×1350 (feed)
- Compress if needed for platform limits
- Add watermark/logo for branding
Each step takes under a minute. No Canva account, no $13/month Pro plan, no 5-minute limit, no cloud upload.
