The right section order for freshers

When you have work experience, it goes at the top. When you do not, lead with what you do have:

  1. Name and contact info (top of the page, not in a header)
  2. Summary (2-3 sentences about what you bring)
  3. Education (your strongest section, put it high)
  4. Projects (class projects, personal projects, hackathons)
  5. Skills (technical and soft skills relevant to the job)
  6. Certifications (if any)
  7. Volunteer work or extracurriculars (if relevant)

Notice: no "Objective" section. Objectives are outdated and waste space. A short summary does the same job better.

What goes in each section

Summary (2-3 sentences): What you studied, what you are good at, what kind of role you want. "Recent Computer Science graduate from [University] with experience in Python, SQL, and machine learning through academic projects. Looking for a data analyst role where I can apply statistical analysis to real business problems."

Education: University name, degree, graduation date, GPA (only if above 3.0), relevant coursework (3-5 courses), academic honors or awards.

Projects: This is your "experience" section. Treat each project like a job. Include: project name, a one-line description, 2-3 bullet points about what you did and what the result was. Use action verbs: Built, Designed, Created, Analyzed, Developed.

Skills: List specific skills the ATS is looking for. Read the job description and include matching skills. Do not list "Microsoft Office" unless the job specifically mentions it. Focus on skills that differentiate you.
