Aspect Ratio Calculator — Find Any Ratio from Width × Height Instantly

Last updated: April 20268 min readCalculator Tools

Enter any width and height — like 1920 × 1080 — and the calculator instantly simplifies it to the ratio: 16:9. Need the reverse? Enter a ratio and one dimension, and it calculates the other. No signup, runs in your browser.

Aspect ratio is one of those things you never think about until something looks wrong — a stretched photo, a cropped video, black bars on a presentation. Knowing the ratio behind your dimensions prevents all of that. This guide covers how aspect ratio math works, every common ratio you will encounter, and when you actually need to calculate one.

How Aspect Ratio Works

An aspect ratio is the simplified relationship between width and height. Take any pixel dimensions, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of both numbers, and divide each by it. The result is the aspect ratio.

For example: 1920 × 1080. The GCD of 1920 and 1080 is 120. Divide both: 1920 ÷ 120 = 16, 1080 ÷ 120 = 9. The aspect ratio is 16:9.

This is pure math — no image processing, no file manipulation. Our Aspect Ratio Calculator does this GCD simplification instantly for any dimensions you enter.

The reverse also works. If you know the target ratio and one dimension, you can find the other. Want a 16:9 image that is 2560 pixels wide? Divide 2560 by 16 to get 160, then multiply by 9: the height is 1440 pixels.

How to Resize Without Distortion

This calculator tells you the ratio and dimensions — it does not actually resize your files. For that, use the right tool for the job:

  1. Calculate the target ratio with our Aspect Ratio Calculator — enter your current dimensions or your target ratio to find the correct pixel values.
  2. Resize images with our Image Resizer — enter the target dimensions and it resizes proportionally, maintaining the aspect ratio automatically.
  3. Crop images with our Image Cropper — if you need to change the aspect ratio itself (cutting from 4:3 to 16:9), cropping removes the excess area.
  4. Resize videos with our Video Resizer — same concept as image resizing, but for video files.
  5. Reframe for social with our Social Reframe tool — converts video between aspect ratios for different social platforms.
  6. Compress after resizing with our Image Compressor — resized files may be larger than needed, so compress to reduce file size without visible quality loss.
