Enter any width and height — like 1920 × 1080 — and the calculator instantly simplifies it to the ratio: 16:9. Need the reverse? Enter a ratio and one dimension, and it calculates the other. No signup, runs in your browser.
Aspect ratio is one of those things you never think about until something looks wrong — a stretched photo, a cropped video, black bars on a presentation. Knowing the ratio behind your dimensions prevents all of that. This guide covers how aspect ratio math works, every common ratio you will encounter, and when you actually need to calculate one.
An aspect ratio is the simplified relationship between width and height. Take any pixel dimensions, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of both numbers, and divide each by it. The result is the aspect ratio.
For example: 1920 × 1080. The GCD of 1920 and 1080 is 120. Divide both: 1920 ÷ 120 = 16, 1080 ÷ 120 = 9. The aspect ratio is 16:9.
This is pure math — no image processing, no file manipulation. Our Aspect Ratio Calculator does this GCD simplification instantly for any dimensions you enter.
The reverse also works. If you know the target ratio and one dimension, you can find the other. Want a 16:9 image that is 2560 pixels wide? Divide 2560 by 16 to get 160, then multiply by 9: the height is 1440 pixels.
Here is every ratio you are likely to encounter, with real-world pixel dimensions for each:
| Aspect Ratio | Common Resolutions | Where You See It |
|---|---|---|
| 16:9 | 1920×1080, 2560×1440, 3840×2160 | Monitors, TVs, YouTube, most video content |
| 4:3 | 1024×768, 1600×1200, 2048×1536 | Older monitors, iPad, some presentations |
| 1:1 | 1080×1080, 2048×2048 | Instagram feed posts, profile pictures |
| 9:16 | 1080×1920, 720×1280 | Instagram Stories/Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts |
| 3:2 | 1440×960, 6000×4000 | DSLR photos, MacBook displays, 35mm film |
| 21:9 | 2560×1080, 3440×1440 | Ultrawide monitors, cinematic video |
| 4:5 | 1080×1350, 2160×2700 | Instagram portrait posts |
| 16:10 | 1920×1200, 2560×1600 | Some laptops, productivity monitors |
| 2:3 | 1000×1500, 1200×1800 | Pinterest pins, portrait photography |
| 32:9 | 5120×1440 | Super ultrawide gaming monitors |
There are three situations where knowing the ratio actually matters:
