1. Make each step produce verifiable output. Don't move to Step 2 until you've checked Step 1's output is correct. Errors compound in chains — a bad Step 1 produces a bad Step 2 which produces a bad Step 3. The checkpoint between steps is where humans add value in a prompt chain.

2. Pass only what the next step needs. Don't paste your entire conversation history into each new prompt. Extract the specific output from the previous step that the next step needs, and paste only that. Cleaner input → cleaner output.

3. Use consistent roles across the chain. If Step 1 uses "You are a senior market researcher," Step 2 should reference that context: "Based on this market research from a senior analyst, you are now a strategic advisor who..."
