16:9 Aspect Ratio — Every Resolution, Pixel Count & Use Case Explained

Last updated: April 20267 min readCalculator Tools

16:9 means for every 16 pixels of width, there are 9 pixels of height. The most common 16:9 resolutions are 1280×720 (HD), 1920×1080 (Full HD), 2560×1440 (QHD), and 3840×2160 (4K UHD). Here is every 16:9 resolution you will ever need.

16:9 is the dominant aspect ratio for screens, video, and digital content. If you are designing an image, editing a video, or buying a monitor, you will almost certainly be working in 16:9. This page is a complete reference for every standard 16:9 resolution, what each one is used for, and how to calculate custom 16:9 dimensions.

Why 16:9 Dominates

Before the mid-2000s, most screens used a 4:3 aspect ratio — the classic boxy shape of CRT monitors and standard-definition TVs. The shift to 16:9 happened for several reasons:

Here is the complete table of standard 16:9 resolutions, from lowest to highest. Use our Aspect Ratio Calculator to verify any of these or generate custom sizes.

Note: 1366×768 is technically not a perfect 16:9 ratio (it rounds to approximately 16:8.99). It became a standard laptop resolution despite this slight deviation.

16:9 in Different Contexts

TV Sizes

All modern TVs are 16:9. The resolution is almost always 3840×2160 (4K) for 43-inch and larger models. The physical size changes, but the ratio stays the same:

TV SizeWidth (inches)Height (inches)Width (cm)Height (cm)
32"27.9"15.7"70.9 cm39.9 cm
43"37.5"21.1"95.3 cm53.6 cm
50"43.6"24.5"110.7 cm62.3 cm
55"47.9"27.0"121.7 cm68.6 cm
65"56.7"31.9"144.0 cm81.0 cm
75"65.4"36.8"166.1 cm93.5 cm
85"74.1"41.7"188.2 cm105.9 cm

Monitor Sizes

Standard 16:9 monitors range from 21 to 32 inches. Larger monitors often use ultrawide ratios (21:9 or 32:9) instead. The most popular 16:9 gaming and productivity monitors are 24-inch (1080p) and 27-inch (1440p).

Projectors

Most business and home projectors are 16:9 natively at 1920×1080 or 3840×2160. Projecting 4:3 content (like older PowerPoint slides) on a 16:9 projector results in pillarboxing — black bars on the left and right sides.

16:9 vs Other Ratios

16:9 is not always the right choice. Here is when to use other ratios instead:

4:3Presentations, older content, iPadClassic slides, documents, and anything designed for square-ish screens
1:1Instagram feed, profile picturesSquare social posts and thumbnails
9:16TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube ShortsVertical video for mobile-first platforms
21:9Cinematic video, ultrawide monitorsFilm-like visuals or ultrawide desktop workflows
