What is a token?

A token is a chunk of text that AI models process. Roughly, 1 token equals about 4 characters or 0.75 words in English. The word "hamburger" is 3 tokens. Spaces and punctuation are also tokens.

How accurate is this counter?

This uses a word-based approximation which is accurate within 5-10% for English text. For exact counts, you'd need the model's specific tokenizer. For cost estimation, this works well.

Why do token counts matter?

AI APIs charge per token. Every prompt and response costs money. Context windows (how much a model can handle) are measured in tokens. Knowing your count helps manage costs and limits.
