A token is a chunk of text that AI models process. Roughly, 1 token equals about 4 characters or 0.75 words in English. The word "hamburger" is 3 tokens. Spaces and punctuation are also tokens.
This uses a word-based approximation which is accurate within 5-10% for English text. For exact counts, you'd need the model's specific tokenizer. For cost estimation, this works well.
